I have long been a fan of A-1 sighted, fixed carry handle AR-15's going back to the 1980's when I had a real deal Colt SP-1. Simple, rugged rifles that are fun to shoot. Recent discussion on this forum and other places had me determined to, at some point in the future, build or have someone build for me a 20" barrel, A-1 sighted AR-15 with triangular hand guards.

Low and behold, what greeted me at the pawn shop the other day but this rifle:

This is a recent build, it has an Anderson lower, I think a Delton barrel, don't know where the upper came from. Pawn shop dude knew little about it, but had it priced to move at $500. Thought about it a day and went back and got it. Shot it yesterday, discovered that whoever had it before must not have shot it at all as it wasn't zeroed, first rounds way low at 25 yards. Ten clicks of elevation on the front sight had me on target, hitting soda cans at 100 yards from the prone position. Another hint it hadn't been shot was there were no marks on the shell deflector before I started shooting, 40 rounds later there were some marks. The rifle does shoot good, accurate and reliable (so far), enthusiastic ejection. Trigger fair only, could be better as far as feel.

To be more authentic as an A-1 rifle, I will need to replace the buttstock with an A-1 version, but it does shoot good with the longer pull of the A-2 stock. I think the hand guards coul be authentic, but may be reproductions.

This will be my fourth A-1 sighted AR, the first Colt SP-1 I bought in 1985 ($440 as I remember), another Colt SP-1 I bought around 1995 that was a police trade in from Reno, Nevada P.D., and an Olympic lower with a G.I. Surplus upper I bought around 2010. All of the prior A-1 rifles I owned are long since sold, but I think I will hang on to this one.

Some pics of my previous A-1's, me hunting jackrabbits in the California desert (Barstow area) with my Colt SP-1, 1985 or so:

That is the way that it is supposed to be. Seems like lately everyone is having a contest to see who can fit the most aftermarket clutter on their rifle. Brownells is making a line of "Retro" AR-15 now. I think that is the only AR-15 I would want to buy. I might have to get one of those.

Love the old M16's also. Here's an early Model 602 I built up several years ago with an original 602 upper on a NoDak lower.

My dad wants to recreate or buy a complete rifle similar to the M16 he had in the army. His had a built in carry handle and forward assist. Who makes those besides Colt?

I believe Brownells has them.

I put together a couple A1 AR's several years back. The first was built using a Colt A1 upper that CDNN was selling a ways back. It came with NOS buttstock assy and a Colt A1 grip. The only non Colt parts were the receiver, lower parts kit and charging handle. The second one was a SP1 that someone kept the lower receiver from and sold the rest. That one ended up with a Nodak Spud lower receiver to finish it off. Most of the 5.56 ammo I have is 55gr M193 so that works out just fine for me.

One of my big regrets was selling or it might have been trading my first AR, it was one with the triangular handguard and the early model rear sight also.

those bring back a lot of memories. the AF M-16s I trained on had the three prong flash hiders and no forward bolt assist. when I got to the RVN I was issued a CAR-15 with no forward assist. lee

I was issued a few M16A1s over the years, and while I was predisposed to dislike the little rifle (coming from a military family of M1 and M14 proponents) I discovered I actually liked it - a lot. It was light, handy, and accurate out to about 400 yards and when kept clean was very reliable.

A decade or so later the department surplussed the upper halves on its M16A1s and Colt SP1s in favor of converting them to M4 style carbines that fit a lit better in a front seat weapon rack.

Since they were little used and in excellent condition, I bought one of each and put them on NDS lowers - back when they were just introduced and didn't have a 10 month wait.

Since the SP1 lacked the forward assist and had an early butt stock without the trap door butt stock compartment for the cleaning kit, I put a three prong flash hider on it and went for the "M16" look. However I also found a minty condition 4x Colt scope and put it on it as well.

I set the M16A1 up with the post 1970 type E buttstock with the trap door in the butt.

I’m on my second A1. The first was a Century that was supposedly built up from little used surplus parts with a new barrel and lower. It was pretty sloppy and loose. Poor accuracy. I traded that one during the panic for a Browning O/U and certainly got the better end of that deal. About two years ago I got the A1 bug again and found a really good surplus A1 upper and stock parts set from a guy in MN. I mated that to a Israeli contract surplus Colt barrel from McKay and a McKay lower. It’s a great set up. Accurate and reliable. I like the A1 from the historical aspect-I grew up watching Vietnam on the nightly news- as well as the shooting aspect. I think A1s are much more ergonomic than the current versions.

Canoeguy your rifle actually appears to be what is known as the "C" or Canadian model which other than the older A1 sight is otherwise an A2 configuration rifle, the enforced lower (below the takedown pin) , heavy barrel profile, A2 brass deflector and A2 buttstock are the indicators,
There were at least two manufacturers selling copies of the C model last year, IIRC they originally came with the A2 handguard and round (instead of teardrop) forward assist.

The pursuit of accurate appearing retro M16 copies has created enough of a subculture of enthusiasts building them that Brownells decided to source and sell enough period correct retro imitation parts to build your own retro M16, They also are marketing three different complete M16 retro rifles priced in the $1200 range,
(BTW they also offer a copy of the XM177 and two AR10 retro rifles ).

Colt recently jumped into the retro market offering two Colt US Govt Property marked retro rifles complete with fake full auto selector stamp, unfortunately they decided the price point was almost exactly double the Nodak Spud guns that Brownells is marketing.

Still kicking myself for not picking up a complete USGI M16A1 upper with BCG back when they were $350 surplus on CTD several years ago, saw one at $600 last year locally , Instead bought a like new S&W mil spec A4 carbine locally for $550 .

Still have my Colt SP1 bought new in 1979 (That btw I shoot better than my A2) as well as an early transitional green label A2 "Government Model" (came sans mag fence factory mated to the older screw joined SP1 lower).
An accurate A1 copy is somewhere in my future but its still early and IMO the prices will come down once the demand subsides especially in a buyers market where complete A4 flat tops can be found new under (and sometimes WELL under) $700 .

BTW, For those interested there is a very informative forum for all things retro AR15 here
