Check out TOPS Knives

I’m unfamiliar with these but they look like solid knives.

They are. I used to carry KA-BAR and Kershaw but recently switched to TOPS for edc. Nothing wrong with the other two brands but TOPS is just more solid, higher quality and completely made in the U.S. :)

TOPS are above my retired-on-Social-Security pay grade. But I wish they made fewer knives with coated blades. I simply believe a coated blade cuts some things, like flesh, a little less efficiently, Ka-Bar's USMC knife notwithstanding. Their coatings don't look very slick.

I await the flames. :D

I like the fact that TOPS uses 1095 steel a lot. Properly treated, it's my favorite blade material.

You are not alone in thinking that many blade coatings impair cutting performance. I read a lot of knife reviews where the first step in prepping a knife is to reach for a can of this:

I have a Topps Outpost Command in a rare tiger stripe finish. Think I even got it here from a member. It's pretty much my zombie, end of days chopper and should excel in that role. I'm also a huge ESEE fan... my granpy always said, "A gentleman should ALWAYS carry a pocket knife..." and gave me a few. Or as Gen. "Maddog" Mattis said, "Always carry a knife with you. Just in case there's cheese cake, or you need to stab someone in the throat.."

True, they are not cheap. But you can find some good deals here and there. Or you can buy from me :p

They have some w/o the coating and they range from kitchen- to utility- to fighting knife. They call it Black River Wash and it looks and feels great. Look at the Tex Creek and the Frog Market Special above, both have the BRW finish.

Another picture of the FMS (Frog Market Special). It' cuts with ease and is by far my favorite kitchen/cutting knife.

TOPS comes out with more kitchen knives (yay) as presented at SHOT Show this year.

This one is called the Hoffman Harpoon, it's a cute neck knife if you are into that. I'm not and I'll probably will change the sheath as to where it can be worn inside a boot or something. Not sure. But I do like the knife :)

Here's more info on new stuff they'll bring out this year. Take my money TOPS!

I love both. But the Tex Creek comes with a leather sheath and it's nice for outdoor stuff but it has no retention and I don't carry it to town. In fact it's in the door pocket of our truck.

The Blue Otter is great, nice size and looks good. The kydex sheath has a belt clip and has a ~45 degree cant. Works nice but limits the position you can carry since you can't adjust it. Some knife sheaths come with an adjustable belt clip (you can rotate it 360 degree) and this gives you way more options. Also, some people don't like the Blue Otter engraving... I think it's cute.

Neither of them is a true fighting knife but rather a great all-purpose edc blade that can of course be used in a SD scenario.

I've more on order and might have another option for you by the end of the week :)
Those are very nice knives.

Thanks and I couldn't agree more. The TEX CREEK is easily a can-do-it-all edc knife. Just ordered a kydex sheath for it with better retention and optional iwb carry.

Recently TOPS rewarded me with a challenge coin. I'm so honored.

I am of two minds about TOPS. Some of their designs are pretty nice, while others are ridiculous. (I won’t say which for fear of zinging somebody’s favorites.) I think of them as being in a class with ESEE knives and Ethan Becker’s designs made by Ka-Bar. This is an arena I haven’t played in much. I have two Beckers, none of the others,

One feature that unites a lot of these designs is the crinkly finish on the 1095 blades that Snubby referred to. One of the Beckers, the BK14 Eskabar (because it is a cross between the ESEE Izula and the BK11) has this crinkly finish. Rather than dealing with the mess of applying a stripper, I just scraped down the crinkles with my folding Razel, leaving a fairly smooth black finish, not as appealing as bare 1095, but better that I started out with.
BTW, I really like Ethan Becker’s knives and will probably get a couple more. I have not yet been tempted to open my wallet for TOPS or ESEE.

Have one and love it. But I don't wear it around my neck, I hate stuff around my neck so I had someone make me a custom sheath.

Another thing that I like about TOPS is that they are all down to earth. You can connect with the CEO and GM on facebook and Instagram and actually talk to them. Very nice touch. Even earned a 20th Anniversary coin... can't buy them. Love it. Very grateful!
