For a plinking or knockabout general purpose .22 rifle, what’s your favorite action? Is it a semi-automatic, a bolt gun, lever, pump, single shot, etc.?

This one’s just for fun, yall. Take care! :)

I never had a .22 semi-auto but I sure like my Mossberg 46B bolt action that I inherited from my Dad. I'm pretty sure it was made right after WW2 and I can't begin to tell you how many rabbit dinners it provided my family.

Let's see what's in the safe at present:

Winchester '06 pump - manual
Savage Mark-II FVT bolt - manual
Marlin 39A lever - manual
Browning SA .22 - semi-auto
Ruger 10/22 - semi-auto
Ruger 10/22 TD - semi-auto

All of them get used, so I call it a wash.

Dream .22.
Weatherby Mark XXII Bolt Action............. Currently a Mark XXII in Semi in the safe

I have a wonderful Ruger American Talo edition that I really enjoy, but I find I grab my built 10/22 more often. The 10/22 shoots just as well as the American and only weighs 3lbs 13oz (with the optic) compared to the 6lbs or so of the American.

I voted semi-auto.

I've kinda gone off semi-automatics lately, except for a few favorites: M1, M1A, 1911, Colt Woodsman. A couple of .22 automatic rifles live here, a Winchester Model 190 and one of the vaunted Ruger 10/22s, but I prefer Winchester or Remington bolt-action .22 rifles of pre-war design. Winchester Models 67, 69, 72 and the Remington "Five-Teen" series: 510, 511, 512 etc. or even older Remington bolt-action models.

I've never even owned a 22 LR semi auto. I fancy wood, blue and accuracy so I gravitate toward classic bolt actions. That being said, I'd have a tricked out Ruger in a heartbeat if I got into the run 'n gun matches.

Right now my serious 22 to hunt with is a Ruger 77/22. It's a early one and shoots as well as many of the more expensive 22s. I've got several 22 rifles that are the old classics and a early 10/22. They all have one thing in common. If they are in the keeper rack they have to be excellent shooters. I don't keep any gun that doesn't shoot well.

My best one is a Mossberg bolt 22 mag but my most used is a 10-22 (in the M-1 carbine configuration) my wife has the International. Third place is a Remington pump.

I have 1964 Marlin M39 Mountie I bought new in 1964 and a 1959 M39 rifle that I bought second hand. Either one is enough .22 rifle for me. The only .22 auto loader I ever liked was the Rem. 550. It will shoot all the .22 cartridges. I gave the last one I had that I had bought new to my son. Larry

When I shoot a 22 rifle, I like to shoot at LITTLE things; or very distant things. For me, that means CZ bolt actions.

Totally agree about the CZ, I have a 452 trainer that shoots lights out. The hard part is, I also have 2 Marlin 39-M Mounties (a 1959 and a 1960), that also shoot lights out and choosing just one to tote around is a chore. Better when I go to a friends that has a backyard range and I can bring all 3.

The CZ's accuracy didn't surprise me, it's reputation was the reason I bought it. But the Mounties accuracy was a VERY pleasant surprise.

For all 3, the only limitations (besides the shooter), seems to be the quality of the sights one uses. The accuracy is there.

I grew up with a JC Higgins semi auto and it was beyond fun. But, I now only have a CZ 452 bolt gun and a Marlin 39A. The Marlin is now the one that gives me the most fun. Last week I took my 11-year old grand niece shooting for the first time using a 39A and she said it was the best day in her life. Can’t argue with that.

Only have two .22 rifles now. A Marlin M-795-SS and my late father's Winchester M-77, the clip magazine version. Son will get the Winchester on his next visit.

If I still got around better, I'd look for a nice Weatherby MK XXII semi-auto and either a CZ M-452 bolt gun or a Miroku-made Winchester M-52 sporter. The bolt guns would be mainly for squirrels, but honestly, the Marlin is plenty accurate for most small game at normal ranges.

However, it has just iron sights, and I'd scope the bolt guns. I had a Weatherby MK XXII for awhile. Some of you probably read my review in, Guns. I wish that I still had it. It was extremely accurate for an auto, well within expectations for a .22 bolt action. And it functioned perfectly. Good product!

So, of course, they quit making it...

There's a huge hole in the menagerie of .22 rifles on hand here because there is no lever-action .22 rifle. I've long wanted a good vintage Marlin Model 39. It's tops on my "want list." Am hoping to rectify that by year end.
