I just bought one a model 24J-DL 22LR over 20 ga needs a trigger guard (on the way) and some bluing touch up. I really didn't need it, but wanted one as it is a interesting design.

I got a old model 24DL in 22/20-3". Very popular gun in these parts. But only old models with solid barrels and frame select. Good small game guns for when squirrels and birds in at same time. 410s are more common. The only ones you see for sale locally are the split barrel models that have a poor rep for accuracy.IMG_0611.jpg

They are surprisingly popular (and expensive) relative to other long guns of similar vintage. I think part is the "combo gun" novelty and a lot of people used one when they were kids and want to relive their youth .

I think you are right. I've not used mine for years. Had it NIB in 1964. I've seen 24DLs old model tagged at $600 in high condition. I don't remember price in 64 but I'm thinking $59.95 and standard model was $49.95. Prices on old Savage 340s & M99s have taken a big jump in last 20yrs.

I have a 30-30 over 20 ga. I bought it when deer and turkey season overlapped here for more than Thanksgiving Day.
I was surprised by a gaggle that walked through when I was in a deer stand with my rifle.

About 15 years ago my nephew asked me to help him find one for coyote hunting, close range while calling them in. I located a used .223/12-ga. 3" (full choke) on GunBroker at a decent price, and it has worked quite well for the purpose.

If you like it you should use it and enjoy it.

Mine is a .223 over 20ga, and it is very nice. I liked that combo for a mix into what I like and availability of ammo forever. It is a 24V and was little used in its life. Half a box of .223 and about two boxes of 20ga. It came with a Charles Daly scope it was bought with which is surprisingly clear and bright (Japanese made).

These things were quite popular in my youth as first guns for kids, largely because they were inexpensive and ‘two for the price of one’ inherent in the rifle and shotgun.

In practice, they were middling rifles and clumsy shotguns.

No one I knew that had one wasn’t eager to move on to a real shotgun after trying to get one into action on flushing birds: cocking the thing then getting it to the shoulder before the bird was in the next County was a task rarely accomplished.

Unless you ground swatted the bird, or shot it out of a tree or off a power line, you came home with an empty bag.

The rifle was inaccurate and clumsy as well, but marginal for stationary game at close range.

Mine is a .357 magnum over a 20 gauge. I have not seen many in several years now.

Sounds like you never actually used one....

The solid barrel models were very accurate. They were no harder to get into action than any single barrel hammer gun.

The last version Savage made of 223/12, maybe only one. It was a camo job. Was not a very good gun. I was in business then and Savage was in a death spiral. Putting out a lot of junk all around including the last 99s. They had stopped supporting warranty repair stations that they maintained for years.

On the 223/12g they had two major problems. The recievers were to soft of cast metal and headspace problems were common. Also barrel bands were snapping from barrel warp when they were fired. I sold one and replaced it and it came back same way. The distributor took care of refund and since I had a couple other new problem Savages, I just quit selling them period.

One problem with the Savage and other inexpensive over and under or doubles is that the barrels often don't shoot together. I've seen some Savages that do, but other that were terrible regulated. You could zero the rifle barrel, but then the shotgun would pattern a foot or more off at 30 yards.

A friend of mine has one which is a 22/410 with a brown plastic stock and forend. He told me it is from the late 1930's-early 1940's. It is very accurate and patterns well with the 410 at 25 yards. I think this is a perfect barn gun and have often enjoyed shooting it. Would have loved this as a kid.

My first long gun was a 1950s vintage 24, this one a .22 WMR/.410 combination. Nothing fancy like the high-comb stock of later years or a scope.

The shotgun caliber’s marginal utility is obvious, so it required a bit more skill, sneaking up on rabbits and such rather than wild action shots. But the rifled barrel could and did take any game appropriate for the bullet out to maybe 100 meters, first for my dad, then me after he passed the gun on to me.

The 24s weren't regulated, that's why the brazed barrel models were popular. Most of them would shoot shotgun pattern to rifle sight good enough. Later separate barrel models were a **** shoot to get a good one.
I think the Tenite stock models were made under Stevens brand. They also had a 410/410 version of the 24.

Used to always see coyotes while turkey hunting just out of shotgun range. Bought a model 24 12 guage/223 & have shot 4 turkeys with it but now haven't seen any coyotes (they know I have it)

EXACTLY right. My first gun was a 410/22 O/U and I'd LOVE to have it back, just for the nostalgia of it. Unfortunately it was stolen in a home burglary in around 1975.

I don’t know about which ones were more accurate. Some have said the brazed barrel ones are, and that’s probably true if they were put together right.
If not, there’s no correcting it. You just have to learn how to shoot the shotgun barrel to be able to hit.
With the separated barrels with the barrel band you can shim the shotgun barrel inside the band to move your pattern a little.
That was a trick I read about a while ago and I’ve used it on mine.
There’s not much movement to be had by doing so but it does move some.
I don’t know the longevity of this fix other to say mine is still working.
There’s no change to the rifle barrel that I’ve noted.

I wish they made one in 45-70/10 gauge. It would definitely find a place in my patrol car.

Bought a 24v model, 30-30 over 20ga. Needed an inexpensive deer rifle at the time and this fit the bill. Used it one or two seasons and then bought my old Winchester.
My son used this on is first deer hunt , now maybe one of his sons will get to use it.
Still have it and never regretted buying it,

The first one I saw was in 1964 as a Birthday present to my older brother when we moved from the city to our first farm. It was a 22/410. He traded it off for a Remington 600 or 660 in 243 when he was 17. (Just before the 1968 gun control act went into effect!)

I'm down to 3! I have a 24C 22/20 with 20" mod barrel, 357mag/20 and a 30-30/20 (both at the standard 26"). As long as you don't want to go into battle, you have all the firepower you will need! My 22/20 has been my constant companion for over two and a half decades (except for a 4 year stretch of an anti-gun employment) I have a hard case with the gun, a scope, sling, cleaning kit, 200 rounds of CCI Mini-mags, and two 20 boxes of assorted shells all in the case. I have hunted squirrels and rabbits many times when I knew nobody was waiting at home. I have hunted Canada Goose in the cooper plated shot days. And many times taken out ground hogs when visiting friends. And one sick raccoon that was menacing the kids at a birthday pool party!

You can only take these opportunities with a gun that is actually with you! (My best friend has the 10-22 take down for the same reason!)

9 weeks ago, at the high priced, rich neighborhood, indoor shooting range, they had one of the 357/20 ga. Walnut stocked versions for sale; asking $459.00 It was only there 3 weeks during the slowest part of the gun selling year!

I think these will always be popular for many reasons, The first being; they are a great Idea! Second, even at todays high prices they are a bargain! Third, The new versions don't have the quality that the 1970's and before did. And compared to they same Idea from Zoli (in Italy), they are 1/8 the price (Zoli's are in bigger cartridges) or from Baikal (Russia) they are 1/4 to 1/3 the price! and up to 45-70!

But any of the Savage models are just about perfect for a teenager.

Back in the late 70s-early 80s I had a .22 LR/20 gauge for a few years and decided that it served no meaningful purpose for me. So I sold it. Another issue was that occasionally the .22 barrel would not fire, never did figure out what the problem was. I have a friend who has one, he had the .22 LR barrel rechambered for .22 WMR.

I have one - the top barrel was a .222, but was re-chambered somewhere along the line to .223. The lower is 20 gauge.

I put an old Weaver 1x scope on it so it's usable even with the scope for the shotgun barrel, and precision .223 shots are easy at shorter ranges.

It's an interesting "all purpose" field gun!

One of the tricks I use for the larger rifle cartridges (in my case 30-30 & 357 mag), is take a 5 or 6 shot nylon butt sleeve and sew half of the shotgun shell loops in half lengthwise! This makes 4 or 6 loops for rifle rounds. If it is a 357 mag then sew those loops in half top to bottom, so the pistol ammo doesn't get buried inside the loop.

Note: The ammo "Trap" in the Camper Models is a good idea BUT, the hinge isn't stiff and there is no catch, So you could loose your stored ammo pretty easily! (Been there, Done that!)

I had one way back when I was a kid, never really cared for it that much that one was a 22/20. The sights were just not right for either the shotgun or the rifle.

I bought one (223/20ga) in the 80’s for a ranch pickup Gun, mostly for muskrats. Good idea and it worked ok but I decided I did not want to own a gun with a plastic trigger guard and cheaply stamped parts.JMHO/YMMV

That is identical to the one I started hunting with nearly 40 years ago. At that time I didn't have a frame of reference, but it was accurate enough for me to put squirrels in the pot.

The original 24s had no provision for scope mounting. They later grooved the rimfire models for scope. It is recomended not to fire shotgun with scope attached. These 24s were so popular around here several smiths were making accessory rail that was D&Ted for scope bases. Some crude and some pretty slick. There wasnt much bite 22 rings could get on the small grooves and they would walk foreward if shotgun was fired. I had a K4x on mine fore awhile and gave up on scope. I have yet to find a set of rings that will hold the recoil of a 3" 20g.

I've had a number of them over the years and enjoyed them thoroughly. Honestly, my attraction to the 24 Savage is emotional mainly. My late mother was maybe the best shot I've ever seen when walking fence rows hunting rabbits.

She carried a 22LR over 410 and had me outfitted with a Ruger 10/22.

The only one I have now is a later "Deluxe" version in shooter grade condition and it's 22 Mag over 20 gauge.

Excellent rifle for the beginner or just a relaxing afternoon plinking.

Sounds just like mine. The stock and foregrip were brown "woodgrained" nylon. A lot like the Remington 66 nylon model

I have three of them: Stevens 22/410, Savage 24B-DL 22mag/20, and 24J-DL 22lr/20. Lots of fun. Truck guns that have come in handy several times on varmints and game. I like them. Two were given to me over the years and now I’m planning to pass them on to my grandsons some day.

I love my 24 C .22Lr/ 20 ga.With the holes in the butt and a sleeve too, you can have 7 shotgun rounds and 10 .22s ready to go. One of the most accurate .22s I've shot. A real game getter.

I have a .22/410. If someone has a 22wmr/20 I'll make an offer. This type of gun has real utility, often marketed as a Keepers Gun for taking care of a property. The small calibers are great barn guns or as we call ours, the "Critter Gitter". They are very popular in the EU with interchangeable
barrels from .22 to .458. Blaser is the gold standard. Don't ask the price. I have one as well, with multiple barrel sets.

I have my grandfathers Stevens 22/410 that I learned to shoot with in the late 50's. It has always been a good shooter. It does what they were designed to do.

I have my granddaddy's .22/.410 Stevens. I was told that he bought it in the WW II era to keep the bunnies out of his garden. It was my second firearm, given to me about 30 minutes after I received an Ithaca Model 49 .22 LR on my 15th birthday.

The plastic buttstock and fore end are called Tenite. Mine has a large threaded plug in the butt plate. I used to carry a small bag of extra .22 LR cartridges back there.
