M1 Garand

Nice looking M1 rifle.

Be very careful because there is something in an oil finish on a black walnut stock that when absorbed through the skin is as addictive as crack cocaine.

AAAHHHHHHHH....The smell. Walk into the CMP gun room in Anniston Alabama........The SMELL is addicting. Like stated above.

Sweet rifle! One of those "someday" guns for me. Back in the '70s my father was working as a game warden and found 2 brothers hunting deer with M-1's. Problem was, magazine limit is 5 for semis. Wouldn't have gone too bad for them if they hadn't lied about shooting 2 does during buck season. The guns were seized. Even back then they were hurting. My dad said the guns looked factory fresh.

Where does a guy find a good M1 Garand that shoots well and not have to pay UNUSUALLY high price. I’m not a CMP member or belong to any clubs. I have a M1 Carbine and an 03 Springfield. Feel like I should round out the set but have little knowledge of the current Garand market. I have a feeling the overall gun mar Kate will not settle down during this political cycle so I guess I should get one as I am not getting any younger. What say you ?

Join the Garand Collectors Association ( Garand Collectors Association - M1 Garand Collectors Association ). Membership will let you purchase from CMP, and also for the money you get their magazine four times a year. Belonged to them a long time, very good organization.

Jump through the CMP hoops, its actually pretty easy

I don’t have a .30 carbine but do have the rest of them, several 1911s, a Garand, two 1903s and a 1927a1 Thompson. Not the GI originals but you can only afford what you can. I do compete and shoot matches with everything except the Thompson. I might carry it to a Zombie match when things get normal. Would be fun.

You mean one of these?

Yea, one of those. Looks like you could spare one or two. Nice collection.

Thank you. Took a couple of years to accomplish that, one of each manufacturer. After a while a friend wanted it more than I did. Down to one now. My Uncle bought that one in the mid 60's for $20.00.

I was no stranger to M1s from age 14 in high school ROTC. In college, I borrowed one from the ROTC armory for the 1961 Arizona statewide Washington's Birthday match. I found that the gas cylinder and its integral front sight was loose in the splines on the barrel. I did a field fix with a screwdriver and a hammer to peen the splines so there was no front sight movement. I then proceeded to take 5th place in a field of over 200 shooters with this borrowed sloppy rifle!

Shortly after my active duty Army hitch, I bought one for my very own, and still have it. It's a Springfield Armory example from 1941, and there are British proofs on the barrel.

In all, a total of 38,001 M1 Garand rifles were shipped to England during WWII under Lend-Lease in 1941 and 1942. These were the “British Garands,” which in recent years have become highly sought after by collectors.
