Beretta 76

While I was at the LGS picking up the HK shotgun and the Hämmerli 212, I spotted this little vintage Beretta 76. In Switzerland the permit to buy guns allows up to 3 weapons provided they come from the same seller on the same day. There is no limitation on the number of permits though. That leads to some compulsive buying to amortise the permit by filling up the third line. This is one classic example at $ 390.-

I also took it to the range but a buddy forgot that it was a 22 Long rifle day only and had brought a 9 mm, so I lent it to him. I just tried a couple of magazines on the gong at the end of the session.

Beautiful pistol. How would you describe the trigger pull? I am a bit spoiled with my Hi Standard Supermatic Citation and Colt Woodsman. Was the 76 designed as a Bullseye pistol or for plinking? Please pardon my ignorance.

I am guessing if that gun was over here, it would cost a few hundred more dollars.

After a good cleaning and lubing (the gun was dry), I found the trigger pull to be very smooth and light, although I have yet to measure it

I am not sure what it’s primary usage was, I consider it as a plinker although I’m sure it’s an accurate pistol

I bought one new in 1981 or 82, it had a Blue Box. If I remember I paid in the $220's for it.

I had it for about 6 months of which it was back for repairs over 5 months!

It would peal slivers of lead from the bullet and deposit them in my forehead! I sent it in under Warranty and they "Coined" the chamber. Whatever that is, it did nothing, so I sent it back and they did nothing. My dealer gave me my money back, so I bought a S&W 41!

My opinion: I think the chamber was a little too much off center to the right and the bullet would hit the notch for the extractor. It probably needed a whole new barrel. I was never offered a different gun. Too bad, I loved the way it fit my hand. I had a 10 meter range in my basement, and enjoyed shooting 22's there. The S&W 41 that replaced it was a lemon also. but I bought it used and I was stuck! (My FIL has four 41's and I shoot them just fine!)

ETA: The barrel assembly on yours has a matt finish, I believe mine was a polished blue like the rest of the gun.

The only Beretta trigger I have expierance that was better than my 76 is on my very early Tomcat 3032!

That is a very nice pistol at a great price. I have the successor to
that model, the 89GS(Gold Standard). The model was replaced by the
model 87, which I don’t think is as well built as the older models.

I also have an 87 target and I believe that, like many modern Berettas, the frame is lightweight alloy, not steel. Still a very good gun imo.

Same LGS had another one, good condition, no box or papers, but with the nice wooden grip for $ 360. Took it home and swapped grips.

A while back I was digging in a box of magazines at a nearby Gunshow.
I spot one with the tell tale Beretta Foot.
It’s a 22! I ask the dealer if he knows what it fits? No!
I have a Model 70s and mags are hard to find.
So I buy it. It’s longer than my other Mags, 10 rounds vs. 8, but it locks in and functions flawlessly! Just sticks out a little.
It was intended for the 76 and other larger Frame guns I think.

The Beretta 76 is very accurate, trigger is super light at 0.8 kgs (1.76 lbs)
