I was at my gun club today and a fellow member showed me his GSG Firefly .22LR pistol. I had never seen one before. Please tell me about these. Are they quality firearms? Seems like it would make a nice plinker.

I have the GSG 1911 .22 cal. Pistol it is a very accurate gun and function well with any ammo. I think I paid around $250.00 for it, in my opinion well worth the money.

Thanks holo. Good to know. My vague understanding is that the Firefly is a scaled down version of a SIG. The one that I handled had "Made in Germany" on the side which should speak to the quality, I would think. The only semi-auto .22 pistol that I own is an unfired NIB Ruger Mark II 50th Anniversary that I bought new in 1999. The little Firefly just piqued my interest.

Is this the rebranded “Sig” Mosquito? If so, stay far away. Worst piece of junk I ever owned. Double action pull was probably 16-18 lbs and single action was 10-12 lb. Wouldn’t shoot a magazine off without jams and misfires. I’m not sure I’d take it if one was offered to me for free.

I think it could be....?

It is the same gun. GSG originally made these for Sig.

Huge reliability problems. I believe the owners manual says to use only CCI Mini Mag ammo.

I owned one that was a total piece of ****, misfires galore. I gave to a friend of mine that rarely shoots it.

Th GSG 1911-22.......IS NOT THE JUNK MOSQUITO.........Never was.
The GSG is a .22 full size 1911 in .22. It will take some original 1911 parts. I've owned one for many years. It work and works good. Th slide and frame are made of some light weight metal. The magazine are heavy duty steel which I put +4 followers in mine making it a 15 shot pistol. Mine runs on any hi-velocity .22 ammo. There is a cottage industry of after market parts for it. After the GSG 1911-22 had been out a couple of years they started producing a clone for Sig. Both are the same gun. The sights are plastic(so is glock sights) and it comes with 3 different front sights for elevation.........A FUN plinker at low cost.
The GSG 922 is just a shortened version of the above.

My late son-in-law had a Sig and called it a jam-o-matic and never tried it again. My grandson took it and after all else failed tried some high velocity ammo and it worked fine.

You are correct about the 1911-22 NOT being the same as the Mosquito. But you are mistaken about the Firefly being a shortened version of the 1911-22.

Except for the markings, the Firefly and the Mosquito are in fact the exact same gun,

As you can see, they are clearly the exact same pistol.

The key to reliable operation for both of them is using the correct recoil spring. They come with two.

One is for HV ammo like the CCI mini-mags.

The other is for SV ammo like the bulk range fodder.

I found that if I installed the right one for the ammo I was shooting that the Mosquito was no more ammo picky or malfunction-prone than any other semi-auto 22LR pistol.

I also found that if you leave the HV recoil spring in it and try to shoot SV bulk ammo, you are guaranteed to have problems.

Based on all the negative I've heard about them I have to assume too many people don't read the manual and don't realize the "spare" recoil spring is actually a lighter one for lower powered ammo.

I tried both recoil springs with mine and various types of ammunition but the results were the same. I paid less than $200.00 for mine. If you are looking for a cheap tackle box pistol that you won't miss this ones for you.
