RUST ON SLIDE OF FN IIVE SEVEN! WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Well Guys, I learned the hard way. My everyday carry gun was my FN Five Seven and after wearing it daily and sweating on it all day, in spite of cleaning and oiling it once a week, I was dismayed to find surface rust on the rear site and on the front of the parkerized slide in front.

I also don't like the fact the plastic slide cover does not allow any means to lube the top of the slide, thus making it almost impossible to carry without rust developing at some point.

I bought 3 of them and now regret the purchase realizing these pistols are too wimpy for adverse conditions. Yes I been told keep it oiled, nitride, DLC, and cerokote will still rust yes I know but rather have that then a parkerized finish.

The other issue I am having with the five seven when you look at the construction of it, the materials it is had to believe it is a fair price for what you pay for. The pistol probably only costs a few hundred to make, way overpriced and very cheap feel.

as it stands now, I doubt FN USA will warrenty it and since there is no way to restore the finish as it has bene compromised, I am tempted to sell it.My other two sadly will only be used during winter so I won't have to worry about how fragile the *** gun is

If it's a carry piece, don't sweat a little bit of minor rust forming occasionally.

As long as you don't allow pitting to take place, the gun should wipe clean no problem. It is a carry piece after all, a little blemish here or there won't hurt anything.

Enjoy the FiveSeven. My dad has one and it is a great blaster.
Don't let that little inconvenience discourage you, if you sell it you might regret it!

What drew you to the Five Seven in the first place? Can you find that in another pistol? If not, you might think about having the slide of one of your Five Sevens refinished in a more durable finish and use that one for carry. JMO and I'm sorry you aren't happy with the guns. That sucks.

I am wondering where can I take it to get it refinished? I thought about buying a new complete slide but for 513 dollars not worth it.

Depends on what finish you want. Turnbull and Ford's do awesome work but it's $$$$. Also you could google "cearakote in my area". Lot's of guys doing that. I know several gunstores in my town that offer cerakoting. There's a company that is known for their hard chrome but I can't for the life of come up with the damn name. Starts with an M. Don't know what their prices are.

Post some pics, let's see how bad

Carry guns get dinged, marred, acquire holster wear, and, yes, even rust. Did you wipe it down daily?

From what you describe the rust seems cosmetic. Clean off the rust as best you can, oil it, and carry on.

A working gun is going to get wear, bumps, bruises, scratches, rust from being used - it's just the way it is. A carry piece is a working gun. Unless it's a safe queen, a carry gun isn't going to stay new. No matter what you carry, it's going to happen.

If you're going to carry, and the way it's starting to look bothers you, you're going to have to maintain it every day, not just once a week.

It's either accept; that blems are going to happen no matter what you carry and/or what you do, or keep them in the safe to be forever new.

wiped it down only once a week and oiled it once a week. I work outside all day and sweat on it. I took for granted that it was rust proof. as for pics my android phone cannot zoom in close enough so it would not be clear.

you are absolutely correct and I should have carried my cheap beretta apx or springfield mod2 instead. I now know the fn is a bit too fragile to handle the rough stuff. My cheap apx as much as it is kind of meh, has never rusted on humid days. however the magazine spring did rust

thanks for the info. I did look them up Ford I believe some reviewers said they messed up their gun and wouldn't correct it yikes! They also don't offer cerekote. The cerekote website i may look into that but if it is anywhere near the cost of a new slide will probably just buy a new slide and never carry this on humid days .

I've never handled the Five-Seven, but I have a PS90 which is probably made from the same materials. The FN is probably tougher than you give it credit for.

Rust isn't going to cause a malfunction. It is also a carry gun, which means it's going to get worn. Also, if you do ever have to use it, it will probably be seized and treated poorly as evidence.

All finishes will rust, even parkerized or cerakote finishes, given enough sweat. Clean it off occasionally and keep carrying it if that is what you like.

What confuses me is you bought three of those? Why?

I would clean it up and keep using it. As others have said, every working gun will show some wear eventually, and the FiveSeven it not exactly a pretty gun to begin with :) (sorry).

As for the price: many FN products are overpriced, not just the FiveSeven, but you're lucky, it's even worse on this side of the pond. Best price in Switzerland is US$2200, some dealers list it at close to US$3000.

BTW: Very good choice for self-defense IMHO.

Anything Five-Seven carry related always reminds me of this:

Jokes aside, it's a carry gun. It's going to collect its fair share of dings and scratches, among other cosmetic imperfections. If it's being carried every day then a wipe-down with oil every day is in order IMO.

If it still shoots to point of aim continue with it as it is. There is no reason to show anyone your carry piece, it's cosmetic damage only. If you rotate it out the others will get the same damage.

Buying a new slide with the same problem would make no sense. Pick the magic coating of your choice and get the slide redone.

I wonder if the Ruger is more durable? You could sell off two and try a Ruger and get the other slide redone...and still have money left over!

They have lots of good choices.

Here is my local guy. His turn-around time beats anyone on Cerakote. His Titanium nitride is very durable too.

Parkerizing will rust if you sweat on it, and leave it. Ya gotta WASH sweat
or salt water off, the same day preferably, with fresh water, dry it,
and re-oil it. I've 'swum' M16A1's in saltwater, and that procedure works.
If you don't hit it with freshwater (enough to dissolve and carry off the saltwater
in the phosphate matrix) it will 100% guaranteed, rust.

I never had issues with rust before and now have learned the hard way. The reason I bought 3 is because it was my favorite pistol and bought one to carry, one to put away, and I guess just one more in case.

wow that is crazy what they charge in your country. Yes FN products are overpriced and for what you get, you can tell they cut corners. I would say it costs more to manufacture a Glock pistol than an FN57. Looking at all the parts I am left to wonder how can this pistol be just as much as say a Sig P226 SAO Legion?

anyway I am going to get the slide refinished and then after that will only carry this when it is cool outside

and yes the 57 round in my opinion is way better than 9mm for self defense. I get it that no pistol round is going to drop the bad guy in a self defense shooiing but the 57 round comes the closest. The only other caliber that possibly could would be the .357 sig round.

HA! I also own one Ruger 57 but just learned the slide is black oxide or something like that. That is not the most durable finish and what puzzles me why would ruger nitride the barrel but not the entire gun? the one thing I do like about it, they don't have a plastic sleave over the slide what can trap moisture.
