Nice writeup on pages 70-71 in the December '21 American Rifleman on the Tisas made 1911A1 US Army, imported by SDS Imports. By the time I saw the writeup, though, I'd already seen them a few days earlier in the glass case at my local gun store and didn't see the post by jeffrefrig until after one had come home with me.

I had seen Hickock 45's review, as well as a couple of other YOUTUBE reviews before I laid out the cash, and the overall consensus was they were definitely a good bang for the buck. I'm also old enough to remember back in the day when I passed on several bargain priced Norinco M1911A1's when they were still being imported new, and I've regretted not getting one then. I decided if the Tisas panned out as good as what I was hearing, and the price was right, I wasn't going to pass this time.

The LGS had in stock two 1911A1 US Army versions, basically USGI clones, and two "Tanker" versions, which is a Commander sized 1911A1. My buddy behind the counter said they'd initially had eight of the full size and four "Tanker" versions shipped in the previous week, but they were selling pretty good and these four were all that was left. I asked him to pull one of each out on the counter for me to handle, but I have to admit the "Tanker" really caught my eye, especially since I already have a couple of full sized 1911's.

One thing on the full sized USGI clone is the American Rifleman article indicated it was Parkerized with a hint of olive drab coloration, but to me it appeared to have a bit more than a "hint" of OD. The "Tanker" version has a dark charcoal, not quite but almost black, color to it's finish. The USGI clone is a dead ringer for my 1943 Ithaca with the exception of the flared ejection port and the mag well is flared a bit as well, both of which I think is a plus. The "Tanker", also sported a little larger safety lever and a wider hammer spur.

In the end, the "Tanker" version came home with me. I've always wanted a Commander style M1911 and decided this was as good a chance to get one as any. Once I got it home I stripped it down to check the internals. One of the YOUTUBE reviews indicated that his had some rust issues on the inside, probably from shipping over salt water, but mine was well lubed with no indications of any rust at all. I was impressed that the slide markings "1911A1 TANKER" were clear and crisp, while the frame import markings and serial number had a pleasant subdued look to them.

I noted the feed ramp on the frame was well polished and overall the gun locked up tight. The trigger felt just about the same as on my USGI Ithaca, and as can be seen in the side by side comparison the sights are USGI minimalist. Personally, I don't (yet) have a problem with USGI 1911 sights. You can also see in the bottom photo the comparison in ejection ports with my USGI Ithaca up front with the standard port, the Tiisas "Tanker" flared port next, and a Springfield, Inc. 1911A1 with a fared port in the rear.

I'm looking forward to getting it to the range for a test run, but will probably be after the first of the year before I can break free for some range time.

Man, I'm glad you bought one! Try it out, then report back! I think Jan. or Feb. one will be in my hands as long as I keep hearing the good reviews. Those 1911s seem to be hard to screw up unless they really go cheap on the parts. As I said in my earlier post, I only had one, one of the low budget ones, and it worked excellently. Early Christmas present for yourself.

Interesting to see a "Commander" length 1911 type pistol without a burr hammer and beavertail grip safety these days. I like it. Some walnut full checkered stocks and a flat bottom magazine would make it even more attractive. I would buy one of those over an RIA all day long.

Well, where there is a will there is a way, so as it turns out I DID get a chance to break away to the range and try out my new 1911.

When I got to the range and the guys saw I had unzipped the case with something other than my trusty Glock 23, several came over to give the new 1911 a look see. The consensus was quite positive, even with a couple of "real" 1911 guys who had not seen one of these yet. The proof was still in the pudding, how would it run on the range?

I brought along 100 rounds of CCI Blazer Brass ball, and 25 rounds of Remington Golden Saber. I wanted to run 50 rounds of ball ammo first just to get a feel, then run some JHP ammo to see if those posed any problems. I also brought along a variety of magazines including the 8 round mag that came with it, a cheapy USGI mag, a Springfield Match Grade mag, and a Wilson 8 round.

I set up the target at the 21 ft (7 yard) line loaded 8 rounds in the magazine and fired off 5 rounds from a gun I'd never fired before. The bottom picture shows the results, not too bad albeit hitting to the left a bit. The range has a trigger gauge and it broke crisp and consistently at 5.5 lbs. I loaded up the rest of the additional box of 50 rounds in the various magazines and ran at least one full magazine of each type I brought, but shot mostly from the cheap USGI 7 rounder without a single issue.

I next loaded up the 25 rounds of Golden Saber JHPs and fired all of them through various magazines with no issues whatsoever. Several of my co-workers wanted to give it a try so the second box of 50 rounds was mainly fired by them, but again, there were no malfunctions at all. They were very surprised when I told them I walked out the door with it new in the box for $400.00 plus tax.

After the range session I got the "Tanker" to my workbench and field stripped it for cleaning and decided to go ahead and tweak the rear sight a bit. Not much, just a bit. I give it another run on the range first chance I get to confirm if I got it zeroed it to my liking.

Looks ok to me. I have a nickel Colt Commander in .45 and really like it. I think I want a lw Commander in 9mm now, but not sure why.

For years I have liked the Chip McCormick Shooting Star 8 round magazines. I have never had a problem with any of them. Lately, I ended up with some Wilsons and they are very good also.

I had that Tanker in my hands today; it felt good, no billboards on the slide, seemed like a nice, solid gun. I would have come home with it today, but the guy behind the counter was being a (Richard). Still, I'll probably get one online. The price was, I believe, $469, or there about. OTD would've been about 500 + background. I want to look at the other one, the 1911A1 US Army, before I hit the "Go to checkout" button. If they had that one in the store, it would probably be right here in my hands. This one, the Tanker, didn't have the hint of olive drab. But, I was happy when I asked "this is the 8+1, right?" (Commander). He said "No, they're all 7+1." Pulled the mag out and lo & behold, 8 round mag. In the used revolver case was a S&W snub .38 Special. I would've bought it at the $700 +/- price, but this man soured me on ANY sale. I'm no gun expert by any means, but I like that shop. I'll buy targets there. Big sale... 50 cents a pop! I asked, as a by the way while I'm here question, do you have any xxxxxx cartridges? I got a stupid look and said thanks anyways.
Anyhow, I got to hold, touch, and look over the Tisas. Nice gun. I will buy one next NEW gun purchase. But not there.

As much as I like my S&W revolvers, what irritates me most about gun buying in CA is all the 1911 pistols I can't buy. Oregon awaits in 2022.

$400 +tax OTD. THAT is another reason the shop I was in won't get any of my gun money. I would have paid pennies under $502 plus background check. I also need some .45 ACP ammo. Not sure how much a couple boxes would cost there, if they even had some. Now, this is a nice area where this store is located, but I'll have the good taste to not name the store; like I said it's a nice store, with a lot of guns and about everything one would need for hunting, etc. Even some cool knives. And I would recommend them to any friends with a "but..." added on.
Thanks for posting, Faulkner! Good shooting, too!

I made time for a quick Christmas eve in-and-out at the range to try out the new 1911 after I'd tweaked the rear sights. I fired one 7 round magazine at 15 yards and am satisfied with the sight adjustment.

I'm liking this Commander sized 1911 more each time I shoot it.
