Just trying to learn.

This Dan Wesson popped up on a local site. The listing says it's a model 14, but I've read 14s are fixed sight revolvers with "pork chop" barrels. I don't think these are marked like S&Ws are, but I'm sure someone here knows exactly what it is or how they are marked

Is it a 14?

What is pictured is a DW 15-2, with an 8 inch heavy vent rib barrel shroud. The "pork chop" shroud was the first version of the DW 357 Magnum, the -2 series changed the shroud and frame to what is pictured above. The model 14 did have fixed sights and a lower profile front sight, the model had the adjustable rear sight.

Indeed a DW 15-2 VH (for Vented Heavy, the barrel)

I recently bought one with two barrels, four and eight inches

I agree that it is a model 15-2. Below is a picture of my 6” VR. It doesn’t have the heavy barrel shroud like the others pictured above.

It is quite accurate.

There is no shame in dealing with an uninformed seller. If your OK with the bbl length check it out.

In the early 80's I had a Dan Wesson model 14 4". Mat finish, fixed sight, 357, removable barrel & shroud. In the hand of one of the police academy instructors it shot tiny little groups with 38 WC target ammo!

Thanks everyone. I was thinking it was a 15 (-2, maybe).

I'm not sure I want another "long tube" but I know these barrels are made to swap.

How hard is it to get a 4" or 6" barrel?

Duckfood, I see what you mean. Unless I want that barrel length, I think I'll keep looking. Thanks!

They are on eBay frequently. Excellent condition barrel and shroud are expensive. If I had to pick two lengths to have, it would be 4 and 8 inches. 4 inch barrels make nice woods revolvers and, in a pinch, can be concealed. The 8 inch barrel provides a very long sight radius and will wring the maximum velocity from 357 Magnum ammo, so it's good for precision shooting and hunting.

If the price is good, I would grab it. You can sell the barrel and shroud if you don't want it, and it will pay all or most of what a 4" one would go for.
