I have reproduced quite a few Scagel knives....but none of the work of the man that learned how to make knives from old Bill.

These are my two tribute knife reproduction of Bo's work from end of the 1930's.

I examined the colection when it sold at James Julia's Auctions. I base my work on that collection. I also grind my blades in his manner and use comprable steels to the English Jessup tool steel he used in the 1920's
Also, reproduce the sheath.

Scagel Recurve Hunter

Camp knife.

So it is interesting to me how many folks piled on the 2 Randalls...and at this point not one like for a Scagel. I found that I could make a Randall in a day...and a Scagel in a week. lol!

I think as modern collectors we fixate on the most popular yet somewhat available. Easier for many to build a collection that way. And I understand that...

From a standpoint of trying comprehend the foundations of modern knifemaking...you look at it differently. And, maybe begin to see the importance of those that broke trail for the semi production makers.

I find it fascinating that the world beat a path to William Wales Scagel door....including Bo Randall and Abercrombie and Fitch. It makes a interesting study.

Agreed Giz!

I am fascinated by Dr Lucie who was able to learn the trade from Bill Scagel and produce some exceptional blades also!

His book is worth every penny...must have been something to be old Bills' friend and physician.
