Default Vintage Remington 700 ADL 7mm Mag

Picked up a vintage Remington 700 ADL 7mm Rem Mag with a Weaver K4 fixed 4X scope. Barrel code dates it to September 1963 mfg date with the stainless steel stamped blackened barrel, common for magnum rounds of that era chambered in the early 700’s. Other than some honest wear on the stock, a few dings here and there, the rifle and scope looked in overall good shape and the bore looked quite good, not to mention the price was very reasonable. Millions of 700’s were made so great deals can be had.

It only took a few rounds to sight in with Federal Fusion 150 grain anmo over the hood of my pickup. I enjoy collecting vintage Winchester and Remington hunting rifles. I also enjoy taking them out hunting. This particular rifle came from central Washington where I’m sure it accounted for a lot of elk and mule deer.

Nice looking rifle! I bet it’s a great shooter.

I love vintage hunting rifles, as well, especially the Winchesters… My 7 REM Mag rifle is a Ruger 77, it’s an excellent elk getter…

Thanks! It’s minute of angle. Every 700 I’ve shot groups an inch or less with the right ammo. I forgot to mention I love vintage Ruger rifles too! I have an older No.1 300 win mag that I love. I like the older Ruger M77’s too with the tang safety.

One of my favorite rifles is a ca. 1980 Model 700ADL in .30-'06. I got it on sale at a gun shop that was closing, I think for about $100. It never did group that well, usually around 1.5", but that is better than anyone needs for hunting larger animals out to 200-300 yards. My main reason for liking it is that it just seems to fit my anatomy perfectly. Everything else is secondary.

My philosophy regarding grouping for a deer (or larger game) hunting rifle is that if it can group all its shots on something the size of a soccer ball out to the maximum distance you will likely be taking a shot, you have no worries about connecting. If you are a varmint hunter, bench rest shooter, or a sniper, you might need somewhat better performance. Otherwise, going through all the hassle of finding the best load for the smallest group is a waste of time and effort.

Nice to see an ADL from the past. Back in 84 I bought a new ADL. Ran me $330. Still with the good ole walnut and glossy bluing but Remington made some changes to the ADL line with a more flared for-end, sling swivel posts, and slimmer pistol grip. Bolt knob was left un-jeweled. Mine is in 30/06.

I picked up a Remington Model 700 C in .300 Win Mag in Iwakuni, Japan in 1972, Great rifle and shot very well. Paid $113 for it in the gunshop there. Came home got married and needed some funds. Sold it for twice what I had paid for it and was happy then. Very nice gun, don't miss it as there is nothing here to use it for.........

What? There are no insurgents at 400 yards that need to be dealt with...?

Cheers!

I just love "old school" wood and blue bolt guns !! I've got a Rem. 700 30-06 that I purchased new in 1986. It has a few bumps and bruises but I wouldn't let it go fir nuffin.

The earlier 700s had a feature some owners did not like, namely with the chamber loaded and the thumb safety on, the cocked bolt was locked in place and could not be opened to eject the cartridge. That was originally intended as a safety feature. Mine has it, but it has never bothered me, so I left it alone. If objectionable, it can be easily disabled by using a Dremel tool with an abrasive cutoff disc. Many bench rest rifles have been built around the 700ADL action, preferable over the 700BDL action for that purpose.

Congratulations on your new-to-you Model 700. I’d probably have bought that one too, even though there really is no use for a 7mm magnum here in Indiana - except just for the fun of banging away with it at the range. As I’ve gotten older and less able to see sights on pistols like I once could, scope-sighted rifles have become a renewed source of entertainment.

When I was a lad I remember reading hunting stories, often over and over again, written by various agitators about their adventures around the world. Usually, or at least occasionally, the writer would mention those fateful words… “.300 Weatherby Magnum.” I still have a copy of a favorite book of those hunting stories, and in my retired years I’ve returned to dragging it out every year in dead of winter and re-reading it. Soon it will be that time again.

My second philosophy is that magnum calibers provide little to no advantage over a .30-'06 or .270 for 99% of hunters in North America. The remaining 1% are those who routinely take extreme range shots (>400 yards), say, in the Rocky Mountains, or for use on very large game such as big bears.

I subscribe to Col. Townsend Whelen’s statement, “only accurate rifles are interesting.”

I don’t disagree. I believe I’ve used a 30-06 more than anything else followed by the 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag. Thinking about going on a Nilgai hunt in South Texas but may bring something bigger for them.

I wonder why a rifle capable of VERY long shots only wears a 4X scope. My Browning ABolt II in 7 mag has a 4-16 with AO. And yes I’ve killed a lot of deer over clear cuts where I was glad to have 16x.

Years ago, in the ‘60s and into the ‘70s, 4X was just kind of the standard for hunters. A lot of the guys, especially the older guys did their killing with iron sights. For them, a 4X was a big step up from a notch and a bead. Most hunters back then weren’t as deep into guns like we are today. They simply didn’t have the money, nor access to information like we do now. The Gospel came from “The American Rifleman”, “Guns and Ammo”, and “Shooting Times”.

My 308 AR-10 has a Leupold 1.5-5 30MM. I took a 10 pointer at 140. I had plenty of scope.

I know of a vintage 700 BDL in .264 Win Mag that maybe has been shot less than a box of shells. maybe I'll talk the owner our of it and use it for pigs.

Really for sentimental reasons and for nostalgia. As a youth, that’s what I hunted with and my grandfather, uncles and dad hunted with in western and eastern Oregon, and Northern California during the late 70’s into the very early 80’s. These are period correct scopes for these rifles and quite sufficient for most hunting I’ll do. I recently used my vintage pre 64 Winchester M70 fwt 30-06 mounted with a vintage Bushnell 4X Scope Chief to kill my buck this season. If I acquire vintage hunting rifles of the 50’s and 60’s, they often already have a quality vintage fixed power Weaver K4, B&L Balvar, 4X Leupold which I simply leave on the rifle. There’s a hunting rifle thread by ISCS Yoda where I posted my hunting rifles (I have lot’s). I have several long range rifles with modern dial up or BDC reticle 4-16, 4-12, 3-12, 3.5-10, scopes for long range.

Heck ya! One day I’ll get either a pre 64 Winchester M70, vintage Remington 700 BDL or Browning Safari in 264 win mag. If you can get it I would in a heartbeat!

140 yds is still ghost ring distance. I’m talking 300-400 yds. Even back in the day 3-9 scopes were available. But probably considered new fangled
