Default Springfield Armory SA-35

Just added one to the pile yesterday. Cabela’s had a 10% off sale.

A soft shooting 9mm in forged steel and walnut with a good trigger … What’s not to like? Waiting on my extra mags from GregCote to arrive. (It’d be nice to get more than one from the factory, but they’re readily available/affordable from MecGar)

Trigger was just under 5lb.3oz. on a five pull average.

Not too hard on the eyes either.

Been on my list since they were introduced. Now that they’re widely available and competitively priced, I’m just about out of excuses.

Lucked into one right after they came out, below MSRP. I sold my Browning not long after. Better trigger, tighter fit, honestly better in just about every way.

I just bought one last week. ($649.00 at Atwoods farm supply) Took it to the range Sunday and ran +/- 150 rounds through it. Quite pleased with the accuracy and handling. Unfortunately I encountered a failure to extract twice between 130-150 rounds. I'm not going to cast blame on Springfield as I caught my grandson single loading rounds and dropping the slide. The extractor hook doesn't look damaged but IMO it isn't designed to load in that manner.

I placed an order for a Cylinder and Slide extractor today and also ordered some magazines from Greg Cote LLC.

I got the first one my preferred shop received a bit over a year ago. It was reliable, accurate and a lot of fun with excellent upgrades over the original. My only minor complaint was the trigger and reset but then 46 years of shooting mostly 1911s will do that lol.
It now lives with a friend who talked me out of it as it was only a range gun for me.

Congratulations, Bumpus13. I predict you'll be well pleased with your SA-35.

I've had mine for 6 months or so and like it a lot. No hiccups, it's nicely accurate, and has decent sights and trigger. The Brownings might be shinier, but I have nothing bad to say about the Springfield clone. I think that Springfield enhanced the design in important ways.

If there was one thing to grouse about, the grips are pretty rough. They're fine for 50 rounds or so, but I will be shooting plate matches and firing lots of rounds. I have a set of Hogues in transit which should fix that issue.

The only complaints I have with mine are the sharp edges on the grip tang/beavertail and the feed ramp was not very smooth and caused issues with HP ammo. Both are things I can take care of myself, but I was surprised. With all the excellent milling on the rest of the gun, why there should be issues with the feed ramp of all things is beyond me.

I tried hard to locate an SA-35 for about the first year they were out. In both local shops and online. The few times they were available I either missed an opportunity to buy one or they were priced north of $1200. It was the affordable clone with the features I wanted but it eluded me. I was like Ralphie dreaming about the elusive Red Ryder Carbine.
After losing the last of my impulse control I broke down and impulse bought a Girsan BHP clone. I had mixed feelings about sending my hard earned money to Turkey. Despite any misgivings the true capitalist in my heart couldn’t say no at the discounted price I found online. I purchased the pistol from a well known and trusted outfit I’ve done business with in the past.

I told my FFL guy I really wanted to buy an SA-35 and he said why you bought the better pistol. He claimed the SA-35 had a Turkish slide and was assembled in but not made in America. I don’t know if that’s an according to Hoyle fact or not.

I believe he believes what he told me. I did not purchase the Girsan Clone from him he just handled the transfer. Ironically it wouldn’t deter me from buying the SA 35 from a durability or build quality perspective.

I will admit I did swap out the horrible stock sights and exchanged the cheesy stock grips for a set of Navridex all black stocks. These are as close to Spegel Delrin grips I have found. The Girsan trigger is by all accounts orders of magnitude worse than the SA-35. The SA 35 does come out of the factory with appealing features the Girsan does not.

One thing I’ll say for the Girsan is it has been 100% reliable with both a variety of FMJ, Federal HST 147 grain and Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P. Many different friends and family have shot it including my wife who finds the hi-power grip to be very natural and comfortable.

I would still love to own an SA 35. I also have the “real thing” but I’m no purist when it comes the Hi-Power and it has had many iterations since 1935 by several countries. The SA-35 is a very handsome example and I’d love to use own as a base gun for a Hard Chrome custom by a good reputable Hi-Power master. But first I’d shoot the heck out of it first.

I've been enjoying mine for the past 6 months or so. I've got ~500 rounds of mixed ammo thru it with nary a wobble or hic-cup.
She may not be as bright and shiny as an original Browning HP, but she doesn't bite me either! Every original HP I shot left me with a bloody hand.
Not so the Springfield rendition.
Enjoy that pistol - she's a keeper for sure - IMO!

I've been wanting one and I'm a Springfield fan, so not much reason to hold off at this point!
