It’s been a good week and it’s only Tuesday. Early I posted about a cool K frame holster I got yesterday. Now today I received my Ruger Deerfield carbine. I’ve been chasing one of these for several years. Prices were always just too high. You never see them in stores or at gun shows. The auction crowd drives up prices over $2k sometimes. This one has a few handling marks on stock but that’s it. And it’s fine because I intend to use it a lot. It came with over $225 worth of extra mags. One of which is an IQM Munitions 10 rd mag. These alone are over $160 bucks. Now I see why. Solid steel construction. I put 14 rds through it already just to test. ZERO FTF. Off the bench it held 2” at 50 yds. And at 100 yds I rang 8” plates 10 out of 10. I planned on upgrading to ghost ring but now I don’t know. The original peep sight might be sufficient. I kinda got a thing for Ruger 44 rifles. I’ll add this to my original 1965 carbine and my new 77/44…… Bring on the Zombies. I got 10 rds of 240gr JSP.

Very nice. Always liked them. Know they came out with the newer version such as yours but don't know when they were discontinued. I recall the older version selling for $119 way back. Heard the originals were expensive to manufacture and required a lot of machining. Often expensive today for sure.

Mauser, they made the newer Deerfield version from 2000-06. So while it’s newer than the original 44 carbine (Deerstalker) it’s much lower production and harder to find. I have an original that I installed a Skinner Ghost ring on. All that’s left is to find a 96/44 lever action. That’ll be a winter project for me.

Good luck on the lever. Friend of mine bought one second hand while we were on a hunting trip in Westfield PA. way back. I recall Ruger making the lever 22 magnum also. Good handy carbines!

Westfield PA…… wow, I used to go there when I was working. Sometimes I’d blink and drive right by it lol.

I had my 29 Silhouette out today , ringing steel . I don't know if your ruger can take it , but Remington has 180gr rated at 1610fps . They might be too hot , but they are some flat shooting accurate rounds . The range had an 8in plate at the 100yd mark , and I was hitting it 5 out of 6 times .

I too am looking for one of those . You're right GB Pogues run the price up on them . I'll just have to keep looking .That 10rd mag looks like it would be fun , but if you don't reload could be expensive .

You got that right cherrypoint. I don’t reload but usually give my brass to a friend. My 2 44 carbines and 9mm PC throw it so far I loose half of it. The IQ Munitions mag is pretty awesome. But honestly, I’ll only use it when fighting Zombies. Or maybe a Bigfoot. It makes an otherwise handy compact carbine bulky. 4+1 is good enough.

Not being a hunter and for at least 20 years only looking at black rifles and black pistols, I did not realize how much the originals had went up in value. I was at a friends house a couple years ago (who was an FFL holder) and an acquaintance of his came in with one with a scope and sling. My friend didn't know how much they were worth either remarkably, and the guy really wanted and needed to sell it for financial reasons. The seller told us they had "gone up" but I didn't know this. My friend asked me what I thought, and I vividly recall the last few I'd seen at gun shows marked in the $600 - $800 range, and told him this. The seller told him he was hoping to get $1400 and this floored my buddy. The seller suggested my friend look them up on Gunbroker and the similar sites. He did and were again floored-I had NO IDEA! They WERE going for $1400 and up...and UP.
My buddy and the seller haggled and I think he got it for $1100 or $1200.

I had lunch with an old friend, a shooting buddy yesterday, when passing thru his city. I talked about the several firearms I had wanted for many years, just because, and one is the Ruger 44 mag carbine, the early version, with the three round internal tube. I bought my 1022 in '65, still have and shoot it, and ever since then, long decades ago, really just wanted its Big Brother. So several years ago, found a nice one on the Cabela's web site, paid I think $1100 for it and load up my Hornady FMJ's for it. It hammers me a bit, and it took me 40 years to finally get it. I don't hunt, so I just punch holes in paper with it. But not too many at one time.

Just a handsome, handsome and formidable rilfe. Sort of like my '44 Inland carbine. Congrats to the OP on his acquisition. SF VET

I wanted one for years and finally bought the first version once. I shot it a few times then realized that I really didn't have a need for it so sold it. They're fun little rifles though.

Nice rifle. I've only seen a couple of those but they cost more that I had available at the time. I'll have to make do with my two older ones, a Model 44RS with the factory peep sight and a Model 44.

I did luck up and find a Model 96/44 at a local pawn shop several years ago.

and later at another pawn shop I found it's little brother, a 96/22.

I’ve seen them sell for $2k online. It’s crazy. I found mine with a buy it now of $1100 with a very reasonable $40 for shipping. I snapped it up quick. It came with 2 extra factory mags and the IQM 10 rounder which retails for $150.

Nice little gun. Had one but didn't like the idea of only shooting jacketed bullets. Sold it and got a 77/44

Caje, I’ve also got an original 44 carbine which they say to only shoot jacketed bullets. Which I do simply because Winchester white box is my load of choice. However I bet if you keep that gas port clean after shooting you’d be fine. A little Hoppes and a pipe cleaner is all you need. I also have a brand new 77/44 in stainless with threaded barrel. MOA at 150yds with a Vortex scope. When I bought it I expected to have to shim bolt and maybe work on trigger. NONE of that was necessary

Timely thread

I know where there’s a 1970 Finger groove model that’s in decent shape for $1100. Just missing the grip cap. Thought it was a bit high. Still there.
