Some of you may be familiar with the Yarborough knife made by Chris Reeve Knives. From about 2002 to 2014, with a gap in there somewhere, these knives were issued to graduates of the Army Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC). There is a lot more back story to the knife but I won't try to put it all here.
I graduated SFQC back in the 1980s. When I heard of this knife I learned that old guys like me could request authorization to buy one. I jumped it and paid $280 to the SF museum at Fort Bragg for my knife. My knife is number 0844.
All these years I had heard that only 1000 knives were made in the first run and a later run was made that had SF after the number.
Recently I saw posts on forums showing knives numbered as high as 9000. I reached out to Chris Reeve Knives to get the facts. Today I heard from Anne Reeve and she clarified things for me.
She said knives numbered 1 to 1000 were held for legacy purchase, like I did as an old guy. Knives numbered 1001 and up were issued to graduates. By the time funding for the knives stopped in 2014, they had produced over 12,400 of them.
The knives with SF next to the number are the knives they made later for more legacy purchases. She said that now only the honor graduate of the course gets a knife upon graduation and it is one of the legacy knives with the SF label. The Special Forces Association now controls legacy purchases.
I am posting this on several forums in hopes of spreading the word as much as possible. My knife is below.
