Default Help Me Choose a Suppressed .22 Handgun

The current thread on suppressors/silencers got me thinking about them again, as I have, off and on now, for several years. And I've noticed that the ATF wait times seem down to weeks now as opposed to a year or so in the past.

One of the questions raised was why would you want one. My answer is simply because I think I would enjoy it. In other words, for fun. Entertainment.

I am thinking either rimfire or 9mm, and a handgun.

I am thinking it probably makes the most sense to buy a handgun with a pre-threaded bbl, but if you've got a better idea, buy a handgun and have the bbl threaded, etc., let's hear it.

I currently own a Sig P365 and a P320. I am guessing one can buy drop-in threaded bbls for either of those, although I don't know this for a fact. (Also own an S&W M41 with 5" HB, 7" and field bbls.)

I dunno, tho. Maybe best to buy a dedicated suppressed handgun...

Budget, within reason, is not an issue.

For the suppressor, sound suppression would be important, but I don't want something that looks ungainly either. Looks matter to me. The cool factor matters to me.

So, your advice and guidance, please. Handguns in .22LR and 9mm — thoughts on my P365 and P320 threaded bbl idea as well, and appropriate suppressors for them to be paired with.

If you own a combination per above, please post pix and tell us about them, what you like and maybe what you don't or should have gotten instead, in retrospect.

Looking forward to your comments.

I use my AAC illusion on a Glock 17, Sig P365, some .22 rifles and a Ruger 22/45. The standard 9mm and .22 thread is the same. .22 is dirtier so I went with something you could disassemble and clean. A dedicated .22 is supposedly better but a 9mm can makes a pretty good drop in the noise.

Mk IV 22/45 with a Sparrow SS. Not very expensive, works great , accurate and a blast to shoot. Sorry - can't post pics here. I've got several 45's I shoot suppressed also, but this little 22 set up makes me smile.

Thanks. I looked this, the MKIV 22/45, up to understand better, and watched a couple of YouTube videos. Looks like a fun little gun. It seems the Sparrow has "First Round Pop," while some other suppressors don't. Given a choicee, I guess I'd prever to avoid "FRP."

Checking out the MKIV 22/45 led me to Silencershop.com, which sells a 3" bbl and a buncha silencers...

Intriguing...

Huntsman, you — somehow, I just know this I guess due to my superior ESP — have a lot of experience with suppressors. Which do you like best and why?

I prefer the Otter Creek Ti22. I have pair of them. Next up is the TBAC Takedown 22, the PWS BDE 22, then the Huxwrx Flow (on the VQ), Then a pair of Dead Air Masks, Banish22 and a SiCo Sparrow. Muchly like the lightweight of the Ti models. The sound is close on most any good rimfire can, but give me Ti....

ono, Also, if you stick with a 22 barrel less than 4", most all HV ammo is subsonic thru them. You can then shoot cheap HV bulk and keep it quiet....

The Hux is a sealed can, so you're kinda stuck using their 'sauce' to clean it. The Sparrow and Mask are great, but heavier than the TD22 or the Ti models. The BDE is a monocore design similar to the Sparrow, but no FRP on a pistol.FRP is kinda overblown, as it's not that big of a deal to me, but I'm shooting(mostly hunting) on a ranch where it don't matter anyway.....

Arlo, I have a SIG P322 with a Rugged Oculus. No FRP, and being modular can be taken apart to reduce length with imperceptible, imo, loss of function, and makes it quite easy to clean.

I don’t shoot larger cal handguns suppressed, only rifles.

To add, the 322 comes threaded.

Take one of your handguns and put

a dummy round or snap-cap in it. Now pull the trigger. It is impossible to do away with those noises!

Now drop a spent case on the floor. Same problem with that noise. Sometimes you can use a brass catcher, but they increase the likelihood of a malfunction.

I had a MAC-10 select fire 9mm with a matching suppressor. In summer with sub-sonic 147 grain ammo and no hearing protection, You would hear the rattling of the action, the rustling of the brass in the dry grass, and the impact of the bullets on the target or backstop. (Steel plates sound like school bells ringing, waterlogged stumps sound like a series of fast face slaps and car doors sound like someone driving nails with a hammer)

Nothing sounds like TV and Movie special effects!

22 RF subsonic sounds higher pitched almost as loud. WWII Commandos were trained to shoot silenced weapons in time with local noises, passing cars and trains or even lightning.

If the ammo used is not subsonic, there is a high pitched crack (a mini sonic boom), This sound will the reflect off hard objects like trees, lamp posts, and buildings. That will continue as long as the bullet is flying OR drops below the speed of sound. (A well suppressed 223 sounds like a 22 mini-Mag being fired.)

When I lived in the countryside, a number of my neighbors had Thompson sub machine guns and one had a BAR, you could hear those for over a mile on a calm day. The Thompson action noises were only audible for a few hundred yards or less when suppressed. (45 ACP Ball ammo is subsonic from short barrels.) Windy days cut those noises a great deal shorter.

ON THE OTHER HAND: A silenced T/C Contender with subsonic ammo is about like a snapping twig. The firing of the old DeLise Carbines were just as quiet, until you cycled the bolt. These were Enfield rifle actions reworked, Barreled with Thompson 1928 45ACP barrels and suppressed with a 2" diameter, 14" long can. Used from Mid WWII into the 1980's (at least 5 saw action in the Falkland War!!) About 800 made and 5 known with folding stocks. There are a few pre-1968/transferable ones in the US.

The Air Force had S&W 39-1 steel frame guns with a slide lock to make them very, very quiet! (I don't know what ever happened to them!) This was in the early 1950's.

The few M-3 grease Guns that were suppressed, were so noisy they sounded like junk cars on a pothole infested road! Sten Guns were almost as bad. The Aussies made suppressed Sterling sub-machine guns that were extremely silent! They saw quite a bit of use in Vietnam, by the US and Aussies. Modified Browning Hi Powers with screw on "Hush Puppy" silencers were a common SOG arm.

I would definitely recommend starting with a rimfire suppressor. I have two Mask HD cans, which in my experience are excellent rimfire cans. I run them on a variety of handguns and rifles, including my M&P Compact .22 (my favorite) and my wife's 22/45 Lite.

M&P Compact .22

Suppressors on centerfire handguns can be pretty effective, but are also quite bulky and cumbersome. My Rugged Obsidian is near 'hollywood quiet' on my M&P with 147s, but in the short configuration on my P365 it wasn't at all quiet, and significantly increased recoil (my theory is the extra mass kept the slide locked longer resulting in more felt recoil). The Obsidian also works great on .357mag and 9mm carbines and is rated for .300BLK subs.

Mike, that P322 is a neat looking little pistol, and the 20 round capacity sounds fun. Just read up on it here: Handgun Review: The Sig Sauer P322 | Field & Stream

4" bbl, though, so I guess lose the ability of a 3" to send SV down range subsonic per Huntsman's comments.

Also, what do you think about stainless steel vs Ti for weight for the suppressor?

Ivan, thanks for all the background info.

Rodan, I think you are convincing me to stick with rimfire. After all, my application is entertainment. Just wanna have a good time!

CZ SP-01 with a threaded barrel from CZ Custom. Dead Air Odessa allows standard height sites and with the sections you decide OAL vs amount of suppression. I’ve been very happy with it.

Walther P-22

I think that they are fun!

I could consider one on a hunting rifle, too. I understand that in Europe hunting with an unsuppressed rifle is considered to be rude.

Using one on a .22 caliber pistol is just purely entertaining!

Fnx 45 tactical

45 is subsonic and therefore very quiet when using a silencer. Most 9mm ammo is supersonic so you still get the crack. I reload my own 147grn subsonic 9mm. You don’t need any hearing protection when using subsonic ammo. I have the osprey 45 which I use on my 9mms, 45 acp, and 300 blk guns

Would seriously consider buying a pistol with factory threaded barrel as aftermarket can be hit or miss. If wanting a larger caliber, might consider a larger hand gun than the 365 which can get picky about what size silencer will reliably function. (actual experience)

With 22's am in for a heavier pistol than the plastic framed lightweights, although have a variety. While ultra lights certainly fulfill some purposes, for me heavier pistols are easier to shoot accurately. But am not carrying them around holstered. Have several Mark IV's, and the "tacticool" version makes an excellent suppressor host. However both the Mark IV's owned came with really ****** triggers that were just plain annoying and not conducive to getting the accuracy desired. Voltz trigger kits used with the oem springs suited the purpose desired.

If in the future you desire too add on to the fun, would considier a 45 bore silencer for both 9mm and 45, and a .30 bore for up to 30 caliber.

I agree with Huntsman - FRP is NBD (no big deal). Still plenty hearing safe with any 22 ammo. And I don't see where a few ounces of weight (can or host) is much of an issue for a nice toy - one way or the other. The higher capacity guns may have a fun factor advantage but extra 22 mags are fairly cheap and plentiful. So, I don't think you can go wrong with any can/host combo that is of good quality and has good ratings. You are in for a good time. Happy (quiet) shooting!

I was going to suggest this, too. You need an adapter to get an external thread for the can, but the P-22 barrel is already threaded. You can find them used for ~200.

Beretta 92/m9a4. Factory threaded barrel, not ammo sensitive, doesn't need booster. The .22 conversion kit also has factory threaded barrels available. I would get a rimfire and centerfire suppressor at the same time if funds allow, they are both fun.

Do it like they do in Hollywood. Take your favorite S&W revolver and thread it for a suppressor.

Is this an easy swap for the average guy to do? Or does it take some level of skill beyond the average guy?

Sorry for the drift but I can't imagine what you are referring to in the sentence above. There was no such thing as the Model 39-1 (it was the Model 44 which had an alloy frame.) I'm not aware that the USAF ever bought silenced pistols in anything except .22LR. The Navy had the Mk 22 MOD 0 pistols which were based on the Model 39-2 and commonly referred to as the "Hush Puppy." Is that what you may be thinking of?

Am not that good at these things. It took doing it in front of a how to video, some slave pins and patience. Am old, with poor eyesight and deteriorating manual dexterity. Wouldn't call it easy, first one took awhile, and had to redo it for safety spacer, but it was worth it. Thing is, the gun is officially the top half and you can send the bottom in to Voltz for reasonable cost. Final trigger pull is proximately 3 lbs with the oem springs, and for my purposes would not want it any lighter.

Also have a Mark 3 22/45 ultra light, and the difference in relative controllability with a suppressor and rapid discharge is not slight.

And they now sell a target length with threaded barrel.

the Ruger's sights are easy to see above the sparrow.

I'm only two suppressors deep at the moment. A Rugged Oculus and a Rugged Obsidian .45.

If I could only have one, it would be the .22 Oculus every day, and twice on Sunday. It's just a whole lot of fun, and not all that cumbersome for real world use. The lack of first round pop is a real thing with my Oculus. If I buy another one, I'd look at the Rugged Mustang-Pretty much same design, but lighter can and lighter duty, which is fine. I'm not into shooting 5.7 or machine guns, etc. Just...plain ole .22 LR.

My centerfire pistol suppressor was honestly a bit of a disappointment...on pistols. Heavy, awkward, and just...not as cool as it all looks on television, I suppose. When I put my Obsidian on my FNX .45 Tactical....It got real fun though. But the best place I've found for my pistol suppressor is actually on my carbines. It is lots of fun with a 9mm carbine. It is ridiculously fun with a lever action .45 or .357/.38 Special.

As far as suppressor hosts, in the centerfire world...that's what I'd suggest. In the pistol world, I got very little to suggest, outside of the FNX. Something big and heavy to help balance the can? a CZ 75 SP01 with a threaded barrel? Of course the sound of a suppressed .45 slapping steel is pretty gratifying too.

How do you guys feel about integrally suppressed bbls on Ruger MKIVs? Pros and cons?

Any other integrally suppressed rimfire handguns?

The Best Suppressed Handgun is a 45acp Double Stack 13 round Magazine with threaded barrel. The BEST I have EVER used is the FNX45 Tactical.

Thanks, Badland and others with centerfire suggestions, but I think I have decided to stay with rimfire. (Edited my thread title to reflect that.)

For a 22 it has to be a Rugged Oculus. Great on a 10/22 or a CZ 457. As for a pistol, any older High Standard Victor, Trophy or HD Military.

Center fire pistol suppressor is the Rugged Obsidian 45. works on 22LR to a 45 ACP or subsonic up to 45/70.

Huntsman, what is the 1911 on the left?

Great collections of cans and pistols!

I have two of them that I really, really like. Lotsa aftermarket goodness to make 'em what we want. Easy to clean, accurate, reliable. Many folks don't like the factory trigger, but I can work with it for the purpose of simple Steel Challenge matches and plinking around. My pet peeve with those is Ruger's insistence on a 4" bbl. If they would just shorten it 1" to 1/2" it would be so much easier for suppressor use. I recall that you can buy those uppers aftermarket, but haven't looked into it in quite awhile.

If I'm to be completely candid though, they usually stay in the safe in lieu of the Taurus TX 22s. They are accurate, good shooting, reliable, and...the extra mag capacity is nice for competition and leagues.

A third option, especially if you're a Sig guy, would be a Sig 322. They're good shooting, reliable, and here's a big bonus: I THINK they have a short enough barrel to keep most of your .22 ammo subsonic, which is a nice thing. I used to have a Ruger SR 22 with a similar sized barrel, and I couldn't hardly get loads to go super out of it. That was the...only thing I liked about the SR 22. It was wildly durable, reliable, and had that short barrel. I myself did not find it to be particularly shootable.

I've not had the pleasure of shooting the S&W M&P 22 Compact, but I hear wonderful things about them.

I'm glad to read that you edited the thread title. I was afraid I had talked in a circle and lost myself along the way in a previous post where I yammered on about centerfire stuff.

On the cans, I myself do love my Oculus, but as previously mentioned would consider a Mustang as well. My close friends shoots a "Q" Erector, and it is a very quiet, lightweight, nice can, and all the modularity you can ask for. Err....As long as you're sticking to .22 LR and not full auto...

I’m a big MK series fan…

Had a spare MKIII upper cut down to 2ish” and threaded. Few companies do it…

Rugged Oculus, red dot… and a sort of Assassins setup. Been very happy with mine.

I recommend you go with your gut. There are a lot of outstanding choices to choose from.

I offer my overall advice based upon my personal experience.

Aspects I like to consider are that a .22 fitted with a suppressor and loaded with subsonic ammunition is a force multiplier. You can silently discharge the weapon and potentially never be detected. In cases with multiple opportunists, you aim for the one that looks to be calling the shots (pun intended) and realize that subsonic also means subpowered.

That said, I am not going to lose my hearing because a miscreant chooses my residence to invade. I'll take my chances with an overpowered bb gun.

CCI SV, Sparrow suppressor, pistol and rifle. No need for subsonic and the extra cost, SV works fine.

And if ya end up enjoying a suppressed 22 lr pistol, you may really enjoy a suppressed bolt 22 lr rifle. Especially with sub-sonics. And they can be considerably less expensive, and quieter than the movies.

Buy Segmented Hollow Point 22 LR Ammo 40 | 74

So far, for a host, I am thinking Ruger MKIV, Sig P322, or Walther P22.

I was considering the idea of having an M41 bbl modified but some reading convinced me that platform is probably too front end heavy. Plus, the bbl work would likely wind up costing about as much as a new .22 pistol.

I like the idea, as suggested above, of buying a pre threaded pistol rather than messing around with modifications. (Plus, the only .22 semi autos I have are an M41 and a Colt First Series Woodsman Sport, neither of which I am keen to modify, tho I do have three bbls for the M41 and could always buy another...)

They don't reduce the sound as much as you might think. I have a .22 Suppressor from Silencer Central. With regular velocity ammunition there's still a notable crack. CCI Quiet IS quiet, but won't operate a semi automatic handgun or rifle. CCI Suppressor ammunition is pretty quiet and will operate in semi automatics. I shoot it in both Sig P322's and Taurus TX22's. But really I don't need it. I live in the woods and hike in the woods. No one cares about me shooting a .22. Your situation may be different of course.

Terry, I don't need a suppressor — just looking to have fun. I think I'll probably shoot it pretty much exclusively at my gun club range.

As I think someone mentioned above, with a ~ 3" bbl, even HV ammo doesn't develop enough speed to break the sound barrier, and is hence pretty quiet when suppressed.

Onomea, I haven't pulled the trigger on buying a can yet, but I did buy the host. I chose the MKIV. I have other guns to use it on, but it will be mostly at home on that one and my RPR. It will be just for fun at the range, too. I chose the Ruger because I had a MKII and miss it. The barrel was pre-threaded and if I decide I want to, there are tons of parts available to upgrade it. Also, it was easy to mount a red dot on it. My eyes ain't what they used to be and they used to be ****. Have fun with whatever you choose!

The Rugers have a history of movie theater quiet, according to my Dad's Detective buddies, when I was a young teenager.
Not quiet, like in the movies, but quiet enough to be used in a movie theater.
They described the sound, as I never got to try one.
IIRC, the diameter of the can, was about 2.5"+.

The MKIV Target, is what we have, trigger is fine for plinking,
and gets better with use.
Put the 2X back on and will see how accurate it really is, later this week, at 25, 50 and 100 yards.
Then maybe a new trigger.

My Air America buddy bought two of the stainless Hunters.

Steel is real.

You might consider the S&W model 422, 622, 2206. Series. An adapter from EWK arms make it ready for a suppressor. Usually find in gun shows for around $400. The barrel is low so even a 1-1/2” suppressor allows the use of factory sights.

CCI Standard Velocity will be subsonic out of most pistols, and operates all of my semi-autos reliably. SV is no louder than any 'suppressor specific' .22LR I've tried through my guns/suppressors.

This could be fun to try while waiting for my suppressed handgun project to come together.

H&R 195/USRA and CCI Quiets:

I bet the combo is pretty quiet. Single shot break top. 710 FPS.
