Glock discontinues “those” calibers

My son bought a Glock in 45 GAP a decade ago. Not sure what model but he only bought it because it was like new and cheap. $200 I think. Maybe someday it’ll be a rare collectible like so many others online

One of my carry guns is a .357Sig H&K USPC. I also have a Sig P-226 in that caliber. I love the .357Sig ballistics & accuracy.

I also carry couple of 10mm models & one .38Super. I refuse to adhere to the mundane. ;)

As much as I love both .40 S&W and .357 SIG, this was a long time coming and makes perfect sense from a business perspective.

The market is absolutely flooded with .40cal police trade-in Glocks, often in unissued, excellent, or very good condition at extremely low prices, hundreds of dollars less than a brand new model, so there's really no point in continuing to manufacture them at this time because they aren't realistically going to sell.

Besides, the FBI has successfully convinced the average consumer that 9x19 Parabellum is "just as good" as .40 S&W or even — against all logic — .357 SIG, so not many people are interested in either cartridge anymore. So if you want to sell a firearm, you chamber it in the ultimate military/law enforcement cartridge that's so good that it literally defies all logic by being equally effective as another cartridge which fires a 9mm projectile at substantially higher velocity and greater kinetic energy.

.40 S&W had its time in the sun and stayed in the race long after everyone declared it dead, but now its time is finally up. It will always have its admirers such as myself and will surely find its way into the hands of many new shooters with the abundance of police trade-ins on the market, but the days of brand new guns chambered in .40 S&W was over long before Glock ceased production of the latest iteration of a pistol they introduced back in 1990.

Not Glock....

...but another cartridge that tried to answer a question that was never asked...and its "new toy" aspect has quickly faded....

.30 Super Carry.

To me, the .45 GAP was just a revamp of the old .455 Webley Automatic cartridge. The 30 Super Carry was the French 7.65mm Longue (sic) from WWII.

Glock had a HUGE line up that really all looked the same and acted the same. This isn't a bad thing, but you can go to the well once too often.

Personally, I'd like to see a Glock rifle or carbine in other than a prototype phase. Imagine something completely original and not a clone of something currently made.

Glock saved the 10mm. Colt will say it was them, but the Delta Elite couldn't have done it all on its own. Without the G20, it would be about as well known as the 9x23 or .45 Super.

The .357SIG is a bad subcompact cartridge, and not a great compact one. It really shines out of longer barrels, longer even than the stock G31. The velocity bump out of short barrels is nice, but comes with a lot of extra flash, recoil, and noise. Glock could have marketed a G35 or G24 type gun in .357SIG, but never did. Like a lot of people, I built one and also got a .40 S&W barrel mainly to shoot 180gr subsonics with a can.

.45GAP always struck me as a European solution to something that few Americans saw as a problem. No American gun manufacturer would have come up with the cartridge, ever.

I bought an HK USP Compact in 357 SIG when I first got a carry permit 25 years ago. Great pistol in terms of ergonomics and solid build; however, it’s a bit chunky for EDC. The cartridge has very good ballistics but it is LOUD out of a short-ish barrel. I did not like reloading it at all. The neck is awful short for the bullet diameter.

My solution is a 1911 in CCO format chambered in 9x23 Winchester. If I had to start over again, .38 Super would be my choice. With hand loads you can get close enough and 9x23 really is on the bleeding edge.

I like the .40 S&W. I have several pistols for that cartridge and plenty of ammo. My Glock 27 fits nicely in a pocket and with a 9 round magazine I can carry in the restrictive states.

I also like the .41 magnum and .350 Remington magnum cartridges. So I hand load.

.38, .357, 9mm, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .380, .22RF, .44 Spl & Magnum.....

(I may have forgotten a few and thus missed them)

So, what do all the rest have to offer that these can't provide?

(I'm wearing a flame-proof suit)

Variety is the spice of life. Imagine if there were only redheads! Hmm, belay my last...that doesn't sound so bad.

I like .41 magnum because of the Model 58. It is the perfect combat revolver with a 210 grain at 950 fps.
