not new at reloading ,but new at 45 long colt,my starline brass is smooth,and winchester has a line about a third down the case,how come?

It was originally designed to keep bullets from being set back into the case from the slam bang feeding of an auto, or as in the case of the .45 Colt, there was/is no crimp groove on the original style of round nose flat point bullets as offered by Rem., and Win., and serves as a lock to hold the bullet from being shoved back into the case should it be dropped on the nose, while the crimp on the case mouth rolls over the beginning of the Ogive, locking the bullet at the front from jumping out of the case under recoil.![]()
