Question about this ammo. I found and purchased 167 rounds for my Mod. of 1905, 4th change yesterday. Rifle or revolver on the boxes, two Remington and two Winchester boxes, Winchester was a full box and 17 in partial box. I went to several sites to see what the value of this ammo is (after the fact) and no one has it for sale. Any of you guys have an idea what the fair price for this ammo is? Hope I wasn't burned too badly. Thanks for any replies.

Just paid $34.95 a box for 2 boxes of 100gr winchester, I have seen it for $50.00.

I was told to make sure to not shoot any ammo in a revolver that had the words "High Velocity" on the box. That is for rifles only.

Look more carefully at what is on those boxes. Remington and maybe Winchester too labeled at least one line of their ammo "High Velocity" purely as a marketing ploy. The ammo was actually standard velocity, whatever that was for specific cartridge. For cartridges like 32-20, 44-40 this can be quite missleading. Yes, once both produced true high velocity, much higher chamber pressure ammo that was intended ONLY for use in Winchester 1892 and Marlin 1894 and other similarily strong, usually single shot, rifles -- not NOT for revolvers or Winchester 1873 and other toggle-link rifles.

ALL boxes of truely high velocity, high chamber pressure 32-20 and 44-40 ammo I have seen had clear warnings on box about what firearms this was intended for and what firearms it should not be use in.

While we're on the subject of .32-20, how do you feel about black powder loads?

I know they'll be more of a pain to clean, and my indoor range wouldn't appreciate them.

.32/.20 Ammo

The Winchester ammo box is marked as suitable for a rifle or a handgun, 100 Gr. lead. The Remington box is marked as High Velocity and has no marking stating the suitability for rifle and handguns. From what you have said the Remington may be too powerful for the Mod. 1905. They too, are 100 Gr. lead and except for the WW stamp on the Winchester and the RP stamp on the Remington, the cartridges look identical. Does the Remington Ammo qualify for the marketing ploy or is it truly "High Velocity"? May be I should talk to Ms. Strickland with Remington and inquire as to its potential. Thanks for the replies as to price, I have around $29.00/box invested.

The true high velocity, high chamber pressure 32-20 loads have/had 80 grain jacketed bullets at an advertized 2000 or so fps. Those 100 grain lead-bullet loads are standard velocity loads, with advertized velocies of roughly 1200 fps. I would not worry about shooting them in any 32-20 revolver in good to excellent condition.

I shot a lot of those 80 grain, 2000 or so fps 32-20s in an old Winchester Low Wall as teenager. They were deadly on foxes out to at least 150 yards.

My favorate 32-20 BP loads are the 777 ffg loads that Hodgdon lists with 115/118 grain lead alloy bullets.

Keep it coming, enjoying the information and the reloading suggestions also. Haven't had a reply from Remington yet, would like to get a confirmation note anyway. NiklasP, not doubting your word, just being very careful, thanks.

SmithOldTimer,

Both of us have gotten old enough to be careful. Be interested to learn what you hear from Remington, if anything.

I couldn't use them in my 3rd change because the cylinder wasn't heated. The 4th change should be fine.

At $29/box you did pretty good. Happy shooting!

I've been eyeing Goex BP catridges with 115gr lead RNFP. I use their Express powder in my T/C Scout, it shouldn't disappoint. $30/box of 50 isn't too bad.

Remington Reply

Stated reply is that the "High Speed" ammo is not suitable for revolvers. I countered with; ( box says "High Velocity" ) but had no further from Remington yet. Velocity and speed are kinda the same but box labeling, that is different. I'll hang in for a little longer as I know they are off work at 04:00PM in Arkansas, 20 minutes away, their time. One other thing; I almost dropped my teeth when the seller would not budge off of his price, glad I wasn't skinned too badly.

If you are going to reload for this caliber get the starline brass holds up better then remington or winchester brass.
I am getting ready to load mine with lead bullets and am still trying to decide on powder. load it to around 1200-1500fps and it will do what it was intended to do.
I have looked at using black powder but still trying to tie down a safe load. Most will duplicate the fps of smokeless. Clean up is not that much harder then cleaning a muzzle loader.

If you reload with starline brass, the primer to use is small pistol. If you reload with winchester or remington, the primer to use is small rifle. My reloads are 3.2 grains of winchester 231 with a 100 grain lead nose round point.

SmithOldTimer,

IF you cannot get straight answer from Remington, 32-20 ammo type can be sorted out if you have access to rifle suitable for true HiSpeed ammo, with 80 grain bullet at about 2000 fps. Ammo you have, with 100 grain lead bullet should have muzzle velocity around 1200 fps.

.32/20 Rifle or Revolver?

NiklasP, have had no other communication from Remington so assume they are firm on the recommendation for rifle only. I intend to send Mr. Conrad an "E" mail thanking him for his consideration on the "Gold Bulk" .22 ammo. I attempted to have that accomplished on Saturday but the address I used for him is not valid. Further research required, thanks for hanging in with me on this.

"I have looked at using black powder but still trying to tie down a safe load."

When you load BP, ALWAYS use either a full case, slightly compressed, or a filler (grits, cream of wheat, etc), on top of a reduced load.

Modern cases hold around 17-18 grains of FFFg BP, IIRC.

SmithOldTimer,

Here is link with more information about 32-20 ammo than I fear you will get from Remington. There are likely other, similarily informative links out there.
