I have seen this term come up a couple times and haven't yet seen a simple explanation of what is meant by hand-ejector? Can somebody enlighten me as to how this is different from a more modern revolver?

Hand-Ejector is S&W term for the way a swing out cylinder works. You have to use your hand to push the
extractor/ejector rod to remove the empties.
An automatic extraction/ejection system would be a top-break revolver that the extractor is cammed out when the gun is opened.
BTW, last time I looked Hand Ejection may have been around for a while, but is still being used.

This term goes back more than a century. The early S&W top break revolvers, for example, were self ejecting -- when you opened them a cam popped the empties out of the chambers so you could reload.

When S&W went to the swing out cylinder model, the cams were no longer possible. Instead these models required the gun's user to push an ejector rod to get the empties out of the chamber. It was a "hand ejector." And that's been the pattern for revolvers with a swing-out cylinder ever since.

The top break S&W had automatic ejectors. When you opened the gun, the ejector ejected without further effort.

In 1896, S&W introduced the small frame 32 which had a cylinder that opened to the side. It did not eject when opened. The ejector rod had to pushed by hand.
The model was named the "32 Hand Ejector".

Several models were named "Hand Ejectors".

However, it is also a TYPE of revolver. ANY revolver which has a cylinder that opens to the side, and has an ejector rod pushed by hand, is, in fact, a "Hand Ejector".

I see. That's where I was getting confused. I read the descriptions of hand ejectors and couldn't see how this was any different from the modern design. So, it isn't any different. I actually haven't ever seen an automatic ejector model, so that would be pretty interesting. Thanks for the responses.
