Wich of these would you prefer when choosing a .44?

As I was completely innocently saying hi in the gunshop at the range, two revolvers catched my eye.

A M29-5 6" SB with target grips, no full lug. Few rounds fired, 555$.

A M29 'classic' 5" RB with rubber Hogues, full lug, almost unfired, 460$.

I already bought a .454 to fill in the large caliber magnum nice, but I still crave for a .44.

I lean towards the 29-5, but it's hard to choose! Wich one would you prefer and why?

They basically are the same gun except for bbl configuration. The 6 inch would give you a bit more sight radius and maybe a bit more velocity but not enough to make a real difference. The heavier 5 inch (for me anyway) seems to balance better and I just like the looks of a 5 incher. Pick them up see how they feel and buy the one that feels right to you. Either a solid choice. hope this helps. By the way..Welcome to the forum!

Thanks!

I held them both, and there isn't much difference in balance. the lug compensates for the extra inch of barrel.

Per the S&W website The 6" gun is actually a few ounces heavier. Other than that they're identical. I'd get the cheaper gun, or both if you can afford it.

Really? I hope somebody will send me theirs, I'll be happy to deal with that junk.

I fiddled around a bit with the two revolvers, and decided the 6" is the preferred one. I don't really like the way the full lug feels and looks.

I finally got the permit for the M29. I did buy the 6", and am VERY happy with it. Accuracy is excellent, it has a fine trigger and it balances well. Normally, I would indeed have got both, but they're a little bit to closely related.

You made a good choice. :)

I am lucky to have guns of both styles. Overall, I prefer the 6 or 6.5 inch standard barrel. I have never been able to get used to the look of the Python-style barrel on an S&W, but will have to admit the ones I have are great shooters.

Quick, go back and buy the 5" Classic. A very good price, and I believe if you had both, shot them side by side, you would ultimately favor the Classic, especially in the 5". I have 9 model 29/629's and my 5" Classic 629-4 is my favorite shooter.

However, my 629-4 Mountain Gun is in my very biased opinion and when all things are considered, the best overall carrying, shooting, and the most practical of them all.

Helas, I need to apply for a licence for each gun I buy, so I couln't get them both. Someone else will get lucky with the 5", I suppose ...

Friedrich, pardon my ignorance, but in what state do you reside? You need a license for each and every handgun you purchase? Even California doesn't required a license for each, but I believe a 30 day wait. Regardless, I am certain you will enjoy your new to you handgun.

I'm at the other side of the big pond! In Belgium. I have to and it takes about 4 to 6 moths to get it. My problem is I have to build a 'gun room' when owning more than 30 firearms, so I have to make choices now and then.
