Just got a 6906.

Hey Newbomb! Nice pick-up. I just got a 6906 myself. I'm not an expert, but here are a few thoughts on the 6906 compared to the 9mm Glocks.
- The gun is a double-stack 9mm, with an alloy frame and a steel slide. It weighs around 27 oz. with an empty mag, which is about 6 oz. more than an empty Glock 19.
- The standard magazine holds 12 rounds. You can also use the longer 15-rd magazine for the 5906. S&W makes a plastic "sleeve" that fits over the 15-rd magazine to make it fit the 6906 grip.
- The trigger on the 6906 is a DA/SA. The lever on the side of the slide works as both a safety and a decocker. Hence, you cannot carry the gun "cocked-and-locked" like a 1911. Most people load the gun, chamber the first round, use the lever to decock the hammer, and then leave the lever in the safety-off position. The heavy DA trigger minimizes the chance of an ND.
- The recoil of the 6906 feels similar, IMO, to a Glock 19. The Glock has a lower bore-axis, which helps to minimize muzzle flip. OTOH, the 6906 is a bit heavier than the Glock, which helps to minimize recoil. They're both easy guns to shoot well.
- The 6906, like most of the metal S&W semi-autos is a very reliable gun. IMHO, you aren't losing anything in terms of reliability compared to a Glock.
- Holsters are somewhat hard to find for the 6906. Many people have had good luck with holsters made for the compact Sig models, (229 and 239.)
That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. That's a good gun that your dad gave you. Let us know what you think after you've taken it down to the range.

you will love it.I got a 6904 the blued model tuesday and shot a IDPA match today with it and it was a wonderful handling gun and very accurate.It will be going to matches all the time.

Tmann, you should try finding a holster for a square trigger 6906!
That's a primo pistol for either carry or home defense. You can make it a family heirloom: take care of it and your son/daughter will give it to his/her kid.
For sights, Trijicon has the Model SA08 that list for about $140 and sell for twenty less. Meprolight offers a night sight, #TNSSA05. The on-line prices I've seen are a bit cheaper than the comparable Trijicons. The Hogues are #69000 and can be found lots of places on-line for about $22.00. Personally, they're too big and I prefer the factory grips, but that's just me. (I actually prefer the single stack 3913/908, but that's another story.)
Google searches will turn up lots of suppliers.

I've owned a 6906 for quite awhile and it is a great handgun. If you work with it on a regular basis you will find the accuracy to be excellent. A very reliable weapon. I carry one everyday, everywhere. Don Hume sells holsters for it at a very reasonable price, there are also several other brands available. I carry with the safety on, if you practice you will learn how to flick it off safe very quickly with your thumb as you draw. Your dad gave you a great gift.

I have a 6906. Very nice gun. I use it as a backup for my other pistols.

The 6906 is a great little pistol, accurate and reliable. I carried one for years on the job and have ran thousands of agency reloads through it with no problem whatsoever. Since my retirement, I trust the 6906 with my life for concealed carry as a "civilian".

No matter what anyone says, the S&W is better than the Glock IMHO.
Not only is it just as accurate and reliable, as previously said, it will last for the next century, bare minimum. Stock up on springs and mags while available, and it will outlast any of us by a long long time. Plastic guns have yet to pass the test of time.

The 6906 is one of the most sought after pistols in the S&W 3rd Generation line. While a lot of folks seek out the rare(er) models to collect, folks are always looking for a 6906 to carry. It is the 3rd Generation equivalent of the Glock 19, and just as popular for the same reasons; it is the almost perfect combination of size and firepower.
S&W factory parts are readily available from both Brownells and Midway, and since they share a lot of parts with the S&W 59-series pistols parts availability should be good for years to come.
While not as simple internally as a Glock, the 6906 (like all 3rd Generation pistols) has proven reliable and accuate.

The 6906 is an incredibly nice hand gun to carry. I looked for one at a price I could afford for almost a year before I found one. As soon as one came up for sale I grabbed it.
For IWB holsters, I like Mika holsters. They're ugly, but comfortable and hide well. I also have a Bianchi Pistol Pocket that's a bit "prettier" but doesn't hide quite as well. I don't know if Ebay is a dirty word here, but there are holsters listed for the 6906 over there. I've also found that an 39xx holster will work as the main difference between the two is the magazine capacity. I use the same holsters for my 3914 and my 6906.
If my daughter gets her License to Carry, I plan on offering the 3914 to her until she decides on exactly what she wants to own.
