My Dad handed down his SW6906 to me. I am completely unfamiliar with this gun and I'm used to my Glocks :D

Anyone care to school me? I've been searching through 17 pages on here just trying to read up on the gun.

Thanks

Hey Newbomb! Nice pick-up. I just got a 6906 myself. I'm not an expert, but here are a few thoughts on the 6906 compared to the 9mm Glocks.

- The gun is a double-stack 9mm, with an alloy frame and a steel slide. It weighs around 27 oz. with an empty mag, which is about 6 oz. more than an empty Glock 19.
- The standard magazine holds 12 rounds. You can also use the longer 15-rd magazine for the 5906. S&W makes a plastic "sleeve" that fits over the 15-rd magazine to make it fit the 6906 grip.
- The trigger on the 6906 is a DA/SA. The lever on the side of the slide works as both a safety and a decocker. Hence, you cannot carry the gun "cocked-and-locked" like a 1911. Most people load the gun, chamber the first round, use the lever to decock the hammer, and then leave the lever in the safety-off position. The heavy DA trigger minimizes the chance of an ND.
- The recoil of the 6906 feels similar, IMO, to a Glock 19. The Glock has a lower bore-axis, which helps to minimize muzzle flip. OTOH, the 6906 is a bit heavier than the Glock, which helps to minimize recoil. They're both easy guns to shoot well.
- The 6906, like most of the metal S&W semi-autos is a very reliable gun. IMHO, you aren't losing anything in terms of reliability compared to a Glock.
- Holsters are somewhat hard to find for the 6906. Many people have had good luck with holsters made for the compact Sig models, (229 and 239.)

That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. That's a good gun that your dad gave you. Let us know what you think after you've taken it down to the range.

you will love it.I got a 6904 the blued model tuesday and shot a IDPA match today with it and it was a wonderful handling gun and very accurate. It will be going to matches all the time.

Thanks so much! I should have mentioned my Glock is a 21C (Compensated/ported full size .45)

I need to pick up a few Mecgar 15rd mags. I think I'm going to get the Fobus SG21BH.

Also, where can I find the hogue grips for this gun? I seem to have trouble finding parts for the 6906.

That's a primo pistol for either carry or home defense. You can make it a family heirloom: take care of it and your son/daughter will give it to his/her kid.

For sights, Trijicon has the Model SA08 that list for about $140 and sell for twenty less. Meprolight offers a night sight, #TNSSA05. The on-line prices I've seen are a bit cheaper than the comparable Trijicons. The Hogues are #69000 and can be found lots of places on-line for about $22.00. Personally, they're too big and I prefer the factory grips, but that's just me. (I actually prefer the single stack 3913/908, but that's another story.)

Google searches will turn up lots of suppliers.

I've owned a 6906 for quite awhile and it is a great handgun. If you work with it on a regular basis you will find the accuracy to be excellent. A very reliable weapon. I carry one everyday, everywhere. Don Hume sells holsters for it at a very reasonable price, there are also several other brands available. I carry with the safety on, if you practice you will learn how to flick it off safe very quickly with your thumb as you draw. Your dad gave you a great gift.

I have enjoyed my 6906 ever since getting it back in March. Very nice gun to shoot.

The 6906 is a great little pistol, accurate and reliable. I carried one for years on the job and have ran thousands of agency reloads through it with no problem whatsoever. Since my retirement, I trust the 6906 with my life for concealed carry as a "civilian".

Here is a picture next to the Glock 21C I just sold.

No matter what anyone says, the S&W is better than the Glock IMHO.

Not only is it just as accurate and reliable, as previously said, it will last for the next century, bare minimum. Stock up on springs and mags while available, and it will outlast any of us by a long long time. Plastic guns have yet to pass the test of time.

Congrats on owning a terrific gun.

The 6906 is one of the most sought after pistols in the S&W 3rd Generation line. While a lot of folks seek out the rare(er) models to collect, folks are always looking for a 6906 to carry. It is the 3rd Generation equivalent of the Glock 19, and just as popular for the same reasons; it is the almost perfect combination of size and firepower.

S&W factory parts are readily available from both Brownells and Midway, and since they share a lot of parts with the S&W 59-series pistols parts availability should be good for years to come.

While not as simple internally as a Glock, the 6906 (like all 3rd Generation pistols) has proven reliable and accuate.

Your father gave you a great gift.

The 6906 is an incredibly nice hand gun to carry. I looked for one at a price I could afford for almost a year before I found one. As soon as one came up for sale I grabbed it.

For IWB holsters, I like Mika holsters. They're ugly, but comfortable and hide well. I also have a Bianchi Pistol Pocket that's a bit "prettier" but doesn't hide quite as well. I don't know if Ebay is a dirty word here, but there are holsters listed for the 6906 over there. I've also found that an 39xx holster will work as the main difference between the two is the magazine capacity. I use the same holsters for my 3914 and my 6906.

If my daughter gets her License to Carry, I plan on offering the 3914 to her until she decides on exactly what she wants to own.

I am sorry to inform you that the 6906 is a POS

But, because I am really a very nice person and want to help a new member of the S&W Forum, I am willing to take it off your hands.

I am also willing to drive to wherever you are in the country and pick it up from you to save you the trouble of mailing it off to me in a "if it fits, it ships" box. I will also pay you whatever you think it is worth and I promise, even though it is an inferior firearm, I will provide a good home for it. It can sleep with the rest of the 3rd generation S&W semi autos that i am liberating.

No need to thank me, just send your address. It is the least I can do.

You are so kind! YOu really want a 69xx don't you? :) They are sweet guns...that is why I am having a hard time parting with mine :)

Zombies

When the Zombies attack or there is widespread civil unrest because of paranoia over the 2012 apocolypse (whichever comes first), I much prefer my 6906 over a Glock 19 or even a 17. I've owned shot, tinkered with bother. I trust my 6906.

6906

I love my 6906.... everything but the hammer. It has a bobbed hammer. I carry 12 and 1 in the pipe. I would prefer to fire the first round single action.
Other than that the gun is light and a great carry gun.

See? If you traded your 6946 off, I wouldn't be forced to do this

I now have a 3913NL with a Performance Center trigger job and a 3913 TSW.
I have one more acquistion to get (before my wife shuts me down) and it is a 6906. Ever since I fired one I have been possessed.

After the 6906 I'll just get a 3914 and maybe a 3953 and maybe by then you'll let me have your 6946.

Then I can finally start on the CS models.

I just picked up a sister gun, the 4013 the .40SW version. The 40 has quite a bit o kick to it but it seems to be pretty dang accurate, much more than I am, at least. I put about 150rds thru it at the last range visit and as I get used to the additional muzzle flip I am getting better groups. Maybe another 300rds and I should be shooting it as well as my XD9mm (2-3" slow fire 15-21'). .40SW is much more available in my area at least...

I just gave my 669 to my dad. I got myself a Sigma. The 669 is almost the same exact gun as the 6906 as far as I know. I liked that gun a lot, especially the da/sa w/ decocker.

The sigma has better sights, is a little lighter and the mag holds 16 rounds as opposed to 12, but doesn't have an external safety and is not double action, so I'm a little leary about carrying w/ a round in the boom tube.

You have a great reliable firearm, enjoy it!

Back in 1989 or 1990 I purchased a 6906 along with a 4516. I carried and fired the 4516 quite a bit but never even loaded the magazine on the 6906. It is still just hanging around in my safe, maybe someday I will take it out and use it. Probably after I wear out the 4516. LOL Only complaints with 3rd Generation pistols is the loooong triggers. I never could get used to them. They are built like tanks and will outlast all of we posters alive today.

6906 is a great pistol. I traded mine because I prefer the single-stacks but I liked it and the member I traded it to was real happy with it, too. Coming down from your father makes it even more meaningful. Hope you hand it down to your own son or daughter someday.

I expect to give each my son and daughter their choice from my collection when they turn 21. (I'm building twins into my collection in case they choose a favorite!!)

Don

You probably already know this but, for those that might not, unless you're in a big hurry, you can fire the first shot single action if you start the hammer back with the trigger and catch it with your thumb and cock it all the way back. It is now cocked and ready to be fired in the sa mode.
