Sigma questions

I recently got a really good deal on a Sigma 9mm ve.

I'm still getting to know this pistol, but so far I like it. It fits my hand so well, it feels better than most other pistols I've handled. And for some reason I really like the heavy trigger.

From what I've read, this gun seems to be the "red headed step child" of S&W pistols. Not many people have good things to say, unless they actually own one.

Anyway, I'd like some feedback for anyone who has some Sigma knowledge.

I have a Fobus paddle holster for carry.

I do have a question about safety. I know there's a trigger safety, but I don't know about the internal safeties (or if there are any). Can someone enlighten me?

I have a Glock 30 which seems similar to the Sigma, but doesn't fit my large hands. I carry the glock with a round chambered as I am familiar with the safeties.

Would you carry your Sigma chambered or is that a bad idea?

Any input greatly appreciated.

Having carried a Model 639 with its ambi-safety for years, it took awhile for me to become comfortable carrying a Sigma with one in the pipe but I got over it. Strange because I've carried revolvers with no worry of pulling the trigger by mistake. The Sigma is an outstanding value and its stout trigger I appreciate absent an external safety lever. I own a 9F and 40VE. I bought a new 9VE "Allied Forces" model new, sold it (too many 9mms) for nearly the same price and bought a 40VE used for $200. All 3 guns gave me zero problems and are more than accurate enough to get the job done. You cannot find a new 9mm or 40 S&W semiautomatic anywhere that can compete with the Sigma for the bang for buck factor.

I carry my SW9VE with one in the pipe, no worse than carrying a DA revolver

I have a .40 GVE and it is always carried with one in the pipe. I've not heard of any accidental discharges with this pistol being carried with one in the chamber and if I need it in a hurry the time it takes to jack one in the chamber could cost you your life.
I would not carry the Sigma with some of the trigger modifications described in other posts.
I had my trigger adjusted and smoothed out by the factory so I don't see any safety issues on the horizon.
The only compliant I have is I don't have time to get to the range more often.

Thanks guys, that puts me at ease.

But knowing the Glock has internal safeties preventing it from firing if dropped, etc provides a very secure feeling while carrying.

I can't seem to find any solid data on the Sigma's safeties. Can anyone define what internal safeties the Sigma has, if any? I just like knowing all the details of my firearms.

Btw, my Sigma is the Allied Forces model. It came with the "Disaster Ready Kit". I'll post pics soon.

Is there any difference between the "Allied" model and other Sigmas?

Sigmas (and Glocks) have 3 safties.
1. The trigger safety prevents trigger movement until pressed by the shooter.
2. The striker is not cocked until pulled rearward by the sear when the trigger is pullel. That's why the trigger pull is long.
3. The striker is locked into position by a metal cylinder, which is pushed out of the way when the trigger is pulled.

The Sigmas and Glocks are equally safe. Neither can fire from being dropped. All safeties are released and the gun fired when the trigger is pulled.
A holster should be used that covers the trigger and does not have a strap or other item that can get caught in the trigger guard when holstering.
As always, keep the finger out of the trigger guard until the gun is pointed at a selected target. In IDPA and USPSA, we disqualify people who move or reload with a finger inside the triggerguard.

I have actually taken to carrying my Sigma over my XD because I feel it is safer due to the heavy trigger. I smoothed out the trigger but wont change the springs or anything else because it is comforting knowing you mean to pull that trigger when you do. I have now fired 500 rds and not one single FTF or FTE. Just works. Blazer, win white box, hydro, gold dot.

I bought one 2 years ago, the 40VE, it was a deal at 99 bucks when I bought my S&W500, I have shot mine about 1000 rounds mostly cast bullet handloads HP and TC 175-150gr and have never had a problem, great gun for even the full price, fantastic gun for what I paid.

I own a S&W Sigma 40VE and love the look and feel of the gun.

I hate the trigger though ... it's long and hard to pull.

But I've shot it a lot and really like it.

Surely someone in the after market will make a trigger kit for it some day.

Mine has had a trigger job and it is still longer and harder than a Glock. It's enough to be safe but not that "fence puller" heavy.

I just joined this forum. I am purchasing a new Sigma 9mm tomorrow as a gift from my wife. I can't wait!

I just bought a Sigma 9mm yesterday, I think I am really going to like it. I may polish up the stainless though.

I polished mine about a year ago and it still looks the same.

Aaaah, behold the Sigma. A marvelously accurate, reliable and ergonomic pistol built around a lousy trigger.

And yet, S&W sells them by the truckload - literally, by the truckload. I believe the Sigma is S&Ws #1 selling firearm. Inexpensive, easy to shoot, accurate and reliable. What's not to like? OK, OK, the trigger is lousy, but not too lousy to keep it from being a very popular pistol.

I figure S&W keeps it lousy to keep the Sigma line from stealing more sales from the M&P line. Given S&W's engineering experience with the M&P line it would take them about 10 minutes to redesign the Sigma trigger to be lighter and more user friendly. However, doing that would give buyers another reason to pass up the M&P for the Sigma.

It would sure be a Glock-killer, though!

KyWstJoe, that sigma looks very nice. I have started on it with emery boards. Looks hood so far, I work on it a little each day. Very nice job!

I have over 1500 down the pipe with mine and my wife fired her new 9VE just yesterday, 239 assorted FMJ and JHP with no malfs. It's clean and loaded in her dresser drawrer. She is new to Carry and will carry without one in the pipe until she gets a little more confident. I got my permit about 35 years ago and carried a six shooter. I finally moved into the 20th century and got the Sigma. I carried the thing with an empty chamber for a couple days and realized the six shooter always had one chambered and I ain't shot my self yet. It takes old guys a while to figure stuff out. Y'all will love the Sigma, I "pull" not "squeeezzze" the trigger. Made me more accurate with it. It's a safe without an external safety DAO combat pistol.
