Hi, and welcome. In looking at the SCSW serial number table, AYM was made in January 1988 and BBF in July 1988. Assuming the factory didn't use a prefix out of order (as they did for the first 640s with the CEN prefix) I think you can reasonably infer your gun was made in the spring of 1998. This is late for the -2, and you may have a -3. Hope this is helpful.

thanks for the reply i've owned this gun since the early 90's. and it a -2 rechecked. smith serial #'s seem to be seem to be very confusing

I think you had a typo. Should be spring of 1988. But we know what you mean.

YER right. 2 typos. Fixed 'um above.

I had to get the piece out of the safe, with appropriate fondling. Original reciept from FFL dealer was incorrect/illegible. Andy's dead & gone so I guess it does not matter except to me. Thanks for bringing this to my attention so I could correct my records.

My issue 2 1/2 RB 66 by the Govt. in 1984 was AER 83XX. Have retired and the old girl was turned in and smelted. Fired my first perfect qual score with that gun using 110 gr Federal JHP.

Sure wish I could've bought that one.
