I heard today from a Car guy that they are trying to eliminate Lead wheelweights. He said they are claiming kids are walking on the interstates picking them up thinking they are candy and trying to eat them.
Sounds unlikely to me,

But has anyone heard about any plans to eliminate Lead wheelweights and when?

Done deal here in California.

I'm collecting all the buckets full I can.

Can't take away your guns, go for the ammo.

Four legs good, two legs bad.

It's been in the works for a while now. The switch to some other more enviorn-friendly material was needed 'cause the green heads got enough people convinced that the small lead weights fall off the tires and lay on road ways and leach lead into the water systems when it rains among other arguments.

Haven't heard about the lead candy thing but I would be surprised at that line of thought either.
I guess to some people they look just like a Snicker Bar w/a steel clip moulded into it and a normal person would eat one of those that you find lying on the ground by the road.

California banned lead wheel weights and, since they use so many, manufacturers have started making wheel weights out of zinc and steel and who knows what else. So, we all get to have them. At least the children grazing the roadside will be safe, now.

My yield of lead wheel weights in a 5 gallon bucket has decreased dramatically in the last year and I live in the sticks a long way from California.

Idiots.

From now one, I'm buying toys made in China and melting them down.

Apparently there is some truth in this. According to what I have read, new cars will start being delivered with zinc or steel ww's beginning in 2011. I think ww's will be around for a long time. Besides, if they can no longer sell lead ww's, what will they do with the lead? Might become a cheap commodity.

Of course all lead shot and sinkers will have to be eliminated step by step.

That's probably why I can never get my truck tires balanced worth a darn.

My wife did ask me to get the lead out once, so I emptied a magazine in the garage. I got the feeling that that's not what she meant....

Environmental poisoning

I admit I am not the brightest crayon in the box. Oil, lead, mercury, and all other minerals come out of the ground. Metorites come from the sky. Does that mean metorites cause all the groundwater pollution in California? Does Saudi Arabia have a big problem with hydrocarbon pollution in its ground water?

Seriously, help me I'm confused about this pollution thing. Where's Algor when you really need him? I've got to start melting the 600 # of scrap range lead in the back yard for cast boolits.

I hope those kids don't pick up and eat a "Tootsie Roll" they see laying on the ground near a dog run.

What will we do with all the lead after the ban starts? Ship it to China so they can put it in children's toys of course.

I'd be glad to. The whole thing is a crock of sh*t. Lead doesn't pose near the threat to mankind as do the Politicians, environmentalists and liberal do-gooders. Some of these fools need to start munching on lead wheelweights instead of the locoweed or whatever it is they use for "brain food".

Amen to that, more pseudoscience parading as fact. Here in very dry NM, my 1100 member firearms club has to set aside a very considerable amount of money for lead remediation should the loser politicans or real estate developers close us down. That lead sitting in sand berms isn't going to hurt anyone unless they build a day care center on top of it and let unattended infants play in the sand.

Now we'll probably get to pay for expensive stainless steel wheel weights. Don

you are kidding about the money for remediation right?

The main environmental harm that comes from lead is all the lead byproducts left after mining. The second is with the improper use of lead products. I consider myself an environmentalist but the lead issue is overblown. California has banned so many items that some companies have just given up and moved out of state. To prevent California communist from controlling me I have done several things. I bought sinker molds to make my own sinkers. A couple of friends and I spilt the cost of several tons of lead and wheel weights.

Here in Idaho, a major tire store changed the first of the year..I am sure the rest will follow. Luckily I have at least a ton smelted now and a 55 gal drum full in waiting. I am still getting about a 5 gal
bucket a week with about 30 percent steel for free.

Oh yeah, zink is da new lead. Unless I am mistaken lead in solid form such as a wheel weight or bullet is reletivly inert in the enviroment. It will oxidize on the surface and will not leach or otherwise move around in its enviroment. Sounds like more hysterical greenies than fact.

Well that is exactly what it is. If you have a source for WW, start hoarding. The ban will hit your state sooner than later. Lead ww have been banned in Europe for 6-7yrs. Once the major chain stores have to buy for Kalif or Maine, ORegon, etc. they'll not buy two diff types for all of their stores. The cahnge is coming sooner than later. I only have about 450# of ww left, maybe abother 600# in ingot form. I am still scrounging.
