mainly .38 spl.

whats your favorite that you can shoot all day so to speak and still have faith in it performing if needed on the street?

i read about the 110gr. STHP non +p and the 110gr. hydra shok non +p but those seem kind of light to me...

what say you?

158 lead SWHP or I like the B/B full wadcutter.

- Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135grn. +P .38 Spl.
- Cor Bon DPX 110grn. +P .38 Spl.

fwiw: Use/Trust These, but "I" cant see myself shooting these all day.

The rounds I trust enough to carry in my snubs aren't the same kinds I can or want to shoot all day!

I like the 158 grain lead SWC-HP Plus-P ("the F.B.I. Load") for serious, but 50 of them at a time is plenty in an Airweight for me.

What I prefer may not suit others. I have some arthritus in my fingers and wrist. It is difficult for me to tolerate long strings of fire with handguns of significant recoil. I have one snub-nosed revolver, a COLT Det. Special. In this revolver I like plain 158 gr. LRN for range and SD/HD. I am looking at some of the new SD load by Hornady. I think for my purposes it will be a good choice. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

Buffalo Bore 158gr +P LSWCHP. They also make a standard pressure loading of the same gas-checked bullet that I would probably use in anything other than an all-steel gun.

Speer GDHP 135gr+P / SB 38SPL or 125/158gr 357 Mag (full power). Recoil is managable for me in a 640-1.

CorBon PowR' Ball 100 grain or their 110 JHPs...fastest .38s going...

I have heard their DPX round is no slouch either...

From my S&W 640...

  • Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135+P .38 Spl.
  • Hornady 110+P .38 Spl.

In my 10-5 2" I use Winchester USA 125 gr +P for SD/HD.

for everyday, there's no reason to use +P, so I reload my own

I also like the already suggested Speer Gold Dot 38's using the 135 gr. +p's, along with both of the Buffalo Bore 158 gr. LSWCHP loads mentioned. wyatte

Federal 125 gr Nyclad HP. Not a long range load. But up close and personal, it'll definitely ruin the BG's day.

I have used the Federal 125 grain Nyclad for years. At one time they had a plus P version. Hard to find today, so I have resorted back to factory 148 wadcutters. The question was what round can be fired all day yet be depended upon for street use. The 148 WC does that well IMO. Little or no muzzle blast, relatively soft recoil, and most importantly, they shoot near my fixed sights out to 25 yards. But, the best thing about them is they do not need to expand to perform in that you have full caliber impact from the onset.

Their only problem is they work poorly in speed loaders and strips, obviously due to their patch cutting design. When I carry backup ammo, I use a different bullet with a rounded or tapered design to allow easy of reload. If I am ever forced to use a speed load with a J frame as my defensive tool, I will have to re-evaluate my tactics more than my reload.
