Why don't they just light the oil on fire as it escapes and just let it burn???? Send down a bunch of liquid oxygen and direct it into the fuel supply, then add a spark. Spark + fuel + oxygen = fire Fire burns off all the oil right as it comes out of the pipe which leaves BP with time to move on to step 2.
Then have the BP executives watch the Hell Fighters with John Wayne. First off-put out the fire (the Duke uses dynomite in the movie-but it's easier here, just turn off the liquid Oxygen). Then pull all the twisted metal away from the pipe. Then lower down a down a christmas tree and bolt her on and then close the valve. Sheesh-do I have to think of EVERYTHING????

Enough C4 would cave in top and seal the well. Then just drill where they're drilling the relief wells from. Save the earth. Save the well. Win win.

The USSR didn't have to explain why all of the fish glowed in the dark. Imagine BHO telling his girls, yes Daddy plugged the hole, that's why your Grouper glows.
Actually the Ruskies bored a relief well and then used a Nuke in it because they didn't have the technology to cement from the relief well.
Once BP gets the relief well(S) deep enough they can kill (bottom kill) both wells. This is proven technology but hitting the existing well in exactly the right place is difficult that's why two relief wells.

This is uncertain strata; no one wants to do anything that might result in a open vent from the reservoir to the sea. The Earth has probably experienced such in the prehistoric past, but that would be an epic unfixable disaster.

BP may not have nukes, but our president does. That is, if he hasn't dismanteled them or done something else to get rid of them. I heard him today, saying the Administration was doing an in depth investigation and the Attny General was on site prepared to bring criminal charges, where appropriate. Mr. President said that his administration upholds the letter of the law and if anything illegal occurrs he will put the wrong doers in jail. I wonder if that also applies to illegal immigrants, or just BP executives.

Blow the shaft, not the well. There's already an open vent that needs to be closed and C4 don't make the fish glow :)

There is no way to stuff anything down the existing hole; really what there are is small cracks and holes. So you have to drill a separate hole then slant it over to the existing hole. The bottom is primeval ooze for thousands of feet. You must get below this and find a solid place which you could trust to collapse and seal the hole. The hole by the way is lined with two heavy sections of well casings. The leak may be around the outer casing at the reservoir or between casings, the casing may have collapsed, or??
The worst case is a collapse of the reservoir dome, how much rock would it take to open up the reservoir to the Gulf or to permeable rock under the ooze? ? This would or could be a very large hole, not the relatively few sq in we have now.

The end of the Riser is cut off and the diamond saw is now trying for a clean cut at the top of the BOP. The scale of these things is impressive, the BOP is the size of a Greyhound Bus setting on its end.

Those guys running the ROV's are truly gifted people. My hat is off to them.

Why in the hell don't they get Daniel Day Lewis down there to show them how it's done!! "You have a milk shake!" "I have a long straw!" "I drink your milkshake!!"

Right now, almost everybody wants to find someone to blame. What's lost in all this nonsense is that there are heroes at work down there right now. Undoubtedly there will be a book when this is over and we'll then know who they are.

I'll be the first to buy it.

BP is looking into using explosives to collapse the pipe. Keep this in mind for future reference, "Saddle Charge". That's all I can say at this point & time.

VTX

You can see the saw in the BP ROV feed, it's like a band saw on it's side, the speculation is that there is a wedge which will be jammed into the cut to keep pinch loads from the blade. Much like a chain saw in a tree.

The newest book from Time-Life. How you, an ordinary person can go from building a birdhouse that can't keep the seed dry to fixing blown oil wells miles below.....

Did ya bother to read the article?

DougE not a bad article. the BOP here is much larger, redundent, but same basic idea. The riser kink is very close to the flange. the riser with drill pipe in it seems not to have moved the BOP which is the size of a bus.

I figured it was fairly accurate given what I've read posted elsewhere by people who are actually in the oil drilling industry.

Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for this mess and BP is pursuing the best course of action by trying to slow the flow until they can kill the well with the relief wells.
