New Revolver Day: 642-1

I've had the urge for a 642 for a while, but every example I've handled lately had some minor "problem" (a too-stiff trigger, less-than-solid lock-up, internal lock, etc.) that caused me to put it back.

On a whim during lunch today I visited a local emporium and asked to see the 642-1 they had under the glass. After giving a quick once-over I asked permission to dry-fire it; once squeeze of the trigger and I said, "I'll take it." Brand spanking new, $458 out the door. Good things come to those who wait:

I was glad to find one that doesn't require a lock-ectomy. The internal lock on my Model 63 doesn't bother me in the slightest, but even though I know the odds of it causing any problems would be remote, I just don't want one on any of my carry guns.

Very nice! I've always wanted to shoot a 642 and will get the chance this weekend. My dad recently bought himself the new 2.5" barreled 642 and he's going to let me have some fun with it at the range.

Lock plug,some dislike the internal lock and take it off,the plug fills the hole left behind.

The 642 is probably my favorite "pocket" gun,and it's my planned main use CCW.

So where do I get one of these "plugs" and is the mod. very difficult? I have never heard of doing it but makes perfect sense. I have a new 642 that I carry daily. Thanks for the help.

i go back and forth between a m60 and a 642 for edc. these two are like spyderco tasman salt pocket knives for me. i need to have one handy.

A 642-1 was my first J-frame, and it is my frequent CCW companion. Recently added Pachmayr compact grips, which fill my hand better than the factory boot style.

Enjoy your 642. I have started to like mine for training purposes. I usually shoot 130gr stuff for practice. I don't like shooting the +p load (ouch!) but I do load them for carry. I went to a defensive handgun class last week..fun..and I highly recommend a class ....and the 642 was perfect for all the scenerios. Just have to put up with a lot of reloads compared to those who brought semis/mags.

I don't mind frequent reloads; it's good practice.

On that note, for the live fire portion of my CCDW class I used my Model 60. There were only three revolver guys in the class of 25-ish, and the instructor put all three of us in the first firing order, because, in his words, we'd "be slower." (Seems like backwards logic to me--I'd have made us fire last, but it was his show...)

I'd grown tired of repeatedly hearing about the absolute superiority of semi-autos during the classroom portion of the course, so I decided to give her all I had. I'm no great shakes as a pistolero, but I was able put four cylinders-full into the target and pick up all my brass in time to step back and watch the two semi-auto shooters on the line learn how to perform remedial action drills with their brand new, presumably unlubed, and almost certainly limp-wristed wondernines.

Agree with all who have said the 642 is the standard for carry snubs. Bought a new 637 with 2.5" barrel last weekend. First J frame I had seen with the 2.5 inch barrel. They didn't have a 642 to compare it with. I'm retiring an old inherited Model 36 that isn't +P rated. I like the slightly longer barrel and that the ejector works better with the slight extra length.

I'm very lucky to have a swat cop CCW teacher, not an NRA guy (no offense anyone). He tells it like it is and he is an S&W ammorer, collects guns and he's huge fan of revolvers. He love's my collection! And I get to go first, because I only have 5-6 shots depending so I get done first...and I'm a good shot! And he's a great guy, too! Love my cops!
