I got to put my hands on a new in the box, model 27-2 5" bbl gun the other day. It still has the cardboard sleeve on the outside of the wooden case, every bit of paperwork including the corrosion inhibitor paper. The gun itself is flawless and the cylinder has never even been turned.

The only problem is that the blue flocked plastic has cracked and there is a hole under the rear sights.

What would be a good offer for a gun in this condition?

I personally might be willing to spend a grand for something like that(kinda partial to five inchers and pristine examples),but I think an offer of 800 would be in line, fair to all, and not construed as an insult.
The case deterioration is not to be unexpected.

I say let the seller set the price, then you decide if it's a deal enough for you to buy or not.

He may only the 350 he paid for it all those years ago

When a seller has not established the selling price I sometimes use the antique "pickers" drill. Ask him what he wants and if he tries to put establishing the value back on you ask him "what would be a stupid price." Simply meaning what is your top asking price. Many times the seller's "stupid price" is well below market value and once you agree to the "stupid price" the seller always feels obligated to close the deal. If the price is actually stupid-high you can let him know that it is, in fact, too high and move forward to negotiate a price you are comfortable with. Good luck.

swap the owner a nice rifle for it

I say swap him a nice M1A with a can of M852 or M118LR for it. My experience shows owners of 5" N-frame .357s tends to like nicely machined parkerized steel bedded in nice walnut.

In all seriousness, I'm finding this thread very interesting...as I've been an owner of a similar used one and a current owner of a NIB 27-2. I also would like to know the current market value of this gun.

The best way to determine current market value is to watch the the market is currently paying for them, the easiest way to do that that is to watch auctions and forum sales all the way to close, see then if the gun sells, and if so at what price.

That's why it is chaps lots of asses when somebody will XXX.XX the price of a gun on a forum sale after the sale closes. There's no point in doing that unless you're just trying to piss people off.

Those are just a couple of markets to watch, there's still gun stores, gun shows, and pawn shops, though they're a little harder to follow to close.

Following 'um is just part of huntin 'um, and I enjoy huntin 'um almost as much as I enjoy havin 'um.

Man that would be spendy. The can of ammo is spendy all by itself. I think it would make a nice straight across trade for a NIB nickle model 29-2 with a 6" bbl.

Yo USAF All Guard Shooter Retired Dude… that 5" minty N Frame you saw way back when is still there in same condition… you still got that nice M1A from same guy I'm guessing and not needing another… plus he don't shoot 30 cal much anymore… so another deal is needed

For all others monitoring and contributing info: it is now Summer of 2025… any update info be appreciated

I haven't seen too many minty 5 inch 27s but then, not really looking

thanks
