OAL for 200 LSWC from Saeco #068

I just got 1500 LSWCs from Stonewall Bullet Co. Very nice company to deal with even gave me some stolen pens :-D

While I can't say for sure I will/will not have a problem I just went through 1000 LSWCs from an unknown mould but I think it's same or similar as the ones I have now...

Shooting my S&W 1911 I occasionally get failures where the spent brass fails to eject and the new bullet rides up the ramp and jams up the gun.

My load is;
Clays 3.9-4 gr
CCI LPP
Mixed brass
200gr LSCW from Saeco #068 mould

OAL of 1.33-1.35

Not sure if I need to start messing with the OAL.

#68 works best at 1.250". At that OAL you should see around .050" of the bullet protruding from the case.

Load mine to 1.25 as well. Never a problem from my Kimber.

1.25 is the number! Loaded and shot well over 100,000 loaded to that length.

Personally, I wouldn't use Clays powder. The length is not as critical as your cleaning process for the problem you are having though. It sound like your extractor needs to be removed and cleaned. Maybe even "tweaked" a tad by a professional "tweaker"!

I think you misread your calipers too. If I load an original H&G #68 to the length you mention, there is no way that thing is going to fit in a magazine, period. Let alone chamber and go into battery.

I think you need to check it again.

I use either AA#2 or Bullseye for my loads with my homecast bullets. I also have a Lee copy of the H&G #68 but it is much longer and has a narrower "snout". I can really put out the bullets with it but the H&G is my absolute 200gr mould.

One other thing, is your 1911 full size or one of the Springfield Champions? 4" barrel or 5"?

I mistyped the caliper measurement, you're right at 1.33 it probably wouldn't fit into the mags...It's actually 1.133 or so. The extractor is clean on my full sized 1911. I bumped up the OAL to 1.25 now so i'll see how those 60 rounds shoot.

Here is a group from the 4 cavity H&G #68 mould that I have.

This is a seated Lee copy of the H&G #68

The bullet on the left is a Lee next to it on the right is the H&G. I'm not trying to be a smart Aleck or anything but should you seat that bullet .100" less, it is going to be really weird looking. The driving band will be WAY inside the case! Just to see how mine looked, when the driving band is flush with the case mouth, the OAL measures 1.230". That would mean at 1.133" the bullet would be .100" deeper than the edge of the case. Now, if that is the case, you have a problem friend!

I only use 1.25 oal for all my 45 ACP's, never any issues.

At 1.133" OAL, the shoulder would be below the case mouth, very short, too short IMO. I run them between 1.250"-1.260".

That is an Ohaus 270gr that I got from Paul5388. They are some awesome bullets! Same with the one right next to it. That one is from the RCBS die, I think. The one in the middle is from my H&G #502 @ 240gr. They needed seated just a tad more for the photo but shot OK just the same. They are awesome from my M625JM! They should work well in my Ruger 45 caliber convertible too, in either 45Colt or 45ACP. I have a Puma rifle in 45Colt that needs to get worked out with some of those "Ruger Only" loads too.

1.250" OAL works well in my SW1911. Crimp is around .470" depending on the bullet.

I didn't get a chance to take photos....or remeasure. But my original OAL looks like the second one from the left, and the new OAL of 1.25 looks a lot like the one on the left. It was definitely not below the case mouth though so I probably mis-typed again. The shoulder was almost flush, maybe a half a millimeter above the case mouth...I'm guessing (again) that the oal was 1.233 and I increased it to 1.250

I tried my reloads at the range today and I had 1 malfunction on the first shot but I didn't have a magazine in the gun so I'm tossing this out as a fluke. From 50 feet I made a nice fist sized group in the target so I'm pretty sure the accuracy is good but I need to run this load a but longer to find out if I fixed the jam problem or not.

That bullet is a copy of the original Ohaus single cavity Jon had. He also had one made at NEI, which they can still make. Mine came from a group buy in a Lee 6 cavity.
