please advice me as to what repair did s&w do to the recalled 586. is it really necessary to do the repair? or do i have to shoot it alot to know if it will malfunction? it's quite impossible for me to send it back to them.

I bought one of the original issue 686s when they first came out.
As soon as I shot full-power Federal .357, the primer flowed back into the firing pin bushing and locked the gun.
S&W replaced the firing pin (on the hammer) and the bushing (in the frame), which are the same parts used in later production. No problems since. They also stamped an "M" into the frame visible when the yoke is open.

The recall only affected the "no dash" and certain -1 models that had problems with primer flow locking the gun.

I have a six inch no dash 586 without the mod. So far so good. I've run a lot of full house 158gr loads with 2400 and mid range load's with no problems. I will not send it back to S&W unless I do run into that problem in the future. As I do not use it for self defence I will sit on the fence for now. Give your's a try and see how it works out you may or may not have a problem.

thanks for your reply guys. what does primer flow back mean and how does it lock up the gun? what do you think is wrong with the original bushing and firing pin? yes, i'm not from the states. will also try to look for the heaviest load available and shoot a couple of cylinders. mine is a 4 incher. i understand that this problem did not affect the 686. more info please...

Primer flow is when the soft metal of the primer extrudes into the firing pin bushing hole and jams the cylinder from turning. This can happen when cartridge pressure is excessive (hot or defective handloads), soft primers, or sloppy firing pin-to bushing hole fit.

The S&W recalls of the early production M686 guns was due to out-of-specification firing pins and bushings that got into the production line. The problem supposedly only shows when hot .357 magnums are fired.
