My New Year's resolution is not to go out of our house for the New Year celebration. Too many drunks on the road and too many complete idiots shooting guns in the air, ignoring the fact that what goes up must come down. A 14-year-old girl was killed about 10 years ago from a falling bullet at midnight. So the wife and I will celebrate at home, and have some neighbors over.

So now I am faced with a crucial decision! Simply put, it is this: Will I serve Margaritas or Manhattans?

John's quick but satisfying Margaritas:
One part Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila
Two parts Jose Cuervo margarita mix
Splash it on the rocks - no salt for me, please!

John's excellent Manhattans:
Two parts Jim Beam Kentucky bourbon
One part Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth
Dashes of Angostura bitters to taste
One teaspoon of maraschino cherry juice
Splash it on the rocks; garnish with a stemmed maraschino cherry

Sometimes choices are difficult. One or the other. What a dilemma. Maybe... I've got it! I'll serve both!

Festivities will start at 9:00 PM. I'll probably crash in bed by 10:00 and will miss the whole enchilada....

I agree with Sip. Hang on to the Margaritas until Cinco de Mayo becomes an official national holiday.

Happy New Year,

Frank

Try adding a little Triplesec to those Margarita's

Again, that's my "quick" margarita. Rather than triple sec (which is pretty much just sugar water), for special occasions, I'll add a dash of Gran Marnier and a wedge of lime from the tree in our backyard. That's the "deluxe" recipe! ;)

Sounds like a good plan. My wife and I have not gone out for New Year's Eve for years. She always pre-orders a huge frozen lobster tail for each of us to enjoy for dinner. Prior to that I'll have my usual 2 manhattans, although I make mine with Canadian whiskey rather than bourbon. (Other than that, your recipe is fine.) I suppose margaritas are OK if you like that sort of thing.

Want to try some margarita's that will have them all talking???
(DO NOT SUBSTITUTE NAME BRANDS, IT WON'T WORK)
You need the following:
ONE 12 oz can of Minute Maid limeaid
ONE 12 oz bottle of Corona
ONE 12 oz can of Seven Up
ONE bottle of white tequila

Pour the first three items in the appropriate sized jug. Open your bottle of tequila, and fill the Minute Maid limeaid can as full as you dare, and pour it into the same jug.
Mix well.....
Serve over ice, with or without salt.

I don't drink margarita's, but those close to me do, and swear by these. I have tasted it many times.....trust me, your magarita lovers will like it...

Margaritas for me, please.

And, despite what some might presume, I will be at home by sunset on NYE. It is truly a night for amateurs...in more ways than one could ever imagine.

Be safe.

Neither would be my first choice, but if I had to pick I would opt for Manhattans, then a iced bottle or two of Moet Chandon champagne at midnight.

No matter what you serve you sound like a gracious host.

How about brandy manhattans (E&J)? It's the staple drink at our deer camp and it must be good for you, the camp owner's in his 80's!

Save the Jim Beam for corned beef glaze and drink the tequila straight (margarita mix is all sugar).

Just looking out for you! ;)

We're gonna be in the midst of a good ol Wyoming blizzard. I'm thinkin' maybe a good ol scotch on the rocks after supper, and tucked in bed by 9 will be just about right.

Jack Black

At one time I would have jumped off a building for a bottle of Jack Black. My dear little wife of almost ten years has me drinking Southern Comfort now. Wish I had all the money I spent on Jack Black over the years...............You guys have a happy and safe New Years Eve. I will be with my wife at a church party. SW 37 will be there also. Mom an Dad would be so proud...........

It's been a while since I drank old fashions but this thread has got me fired up. I think I'll buy a bottle of rye tommorrow-pick up a box of sugar cubes and pick an orange off my tree and get to mixin' ! Already have my bitters.

Now if I can just find some firecrackers

I vote for both. You can send me one each to evaluate. I'll be fair, I promise.

Choosing between Margaritas and Manhattans is difficult since they both remind me of my favorite mixed drink.
Mogen-David extra-heavy Malaga wine with soda water and lime juice. :D
