Guys,
I've made the decision to get a tactical rifle and have decided on the S&W 15-22 verrsus at 556. I'm all over plinking at 4 cents/round and using it for rabbit hunting my Deer farms. All I'm left with now is deciding to go with the MOE version or not. I've never owned or used a tactical rifle so I'm pretty much in the dark as to whats the difference. So, what's the advantage of springing the extra $70 or so for the MOE version.

Thanks,
Bear

MOE stocks, sights, and grip is what you get. Whether those items are worth it is up to you. I didn't get that model, but now wish I did have the MBUS. Grip and stock I don't care about.

In the long run, it would be cheaper to buy the MOE model than to buy the base model and have to upgrade, unless you're going to go with upgrades other than those from Magpul.

But the base model alone is solid as is; fun and totally functional for all aspects, esp. plinking and varmint eradication. It's when you read the picture thread and your eyes get large over all the gadgets you want that things change.

Peruse the pic thread. Then decide how sexy you want to look.

I'd go MOE. I have a NY complaint version, I've already switched out and repinned and epoxyed a foliage green MOE stock. A grip is up next and eventually I want to get a front and rear MBUS.

If they had had the MOE ( do they even make a compliant version) I would have bought that in the first place and saved myself some money.

You also get a sling mount.

The sights alone are the price of the bump.

Plus, the MOE version comes with a flash suppressor on the barrel. Helps to keep the barrel from looking "naked"! And the MBUS flip-up sights are really nice! Go with the MOE! Sure glad I did.....

I got the base model but I would get the MOE model if I were to do it over. The upgrades are well worth the $70.

MOE Stock - $60
MOE grip - $20
MBUS - $90
Single point sling mount- (This is one option that isn't just a simple add-on)

I spent a little over $200 adding the bits that the MOE came with. Get the MOE.

Get the MOE. If you dont like it there will be plenty of people upgrading from Plain Jane who will trade you.

The MOE variant of the M&P15 is a nice, light weight, quick handling rifle. Go for it!

Or if you don't want another cookie cutter MOE, you can get the MOE and keep a bit here or there off of it, sell the other stuff and adjust it to how you like it. That's what I'm doin. I've got optics, now I just need to get the money for the stock I want and can sell my MOE stock and maybe even my sights. Makes upgrading a bit cheaper, haha.

I originally wanted the standard rifle with just the flash suppressor which had just been sold out. Even then, I wanted the Magpul sights and in the end I don't regret going with the MOE version. The basic rifle with the MBUS sights would cost me more for just that setup.

Yup, exactly! Value. I'm very happy with my MOE. I love the grip the most, for me.

Is there any difference as far as functionality goes?

the MOE is the same as the regular, it just wears magpul's gear like the grip, stock, sights and rear sling attachment loop.

there are base models with flash suppressors.

everyone in here is in love with the MOE so i'll be the negative one. I like the hogue pistol grip better than the magpul one. the CTR stock is cool but it doesn't really make your rifle perform any better. A cool add on part, but I would never spend $90 on it out of pocket. (thats the price of it individually). As for the Iron sights, I prefer just that- Cold steel. The magpul mbus are a polymer which while cool, just seems out of place to me. I managed to get my 15-22 for only $350, so i went with the base. But if you are considering like $450 for the base or $500 for the magpul version, the magpul version would be a much better value.

The votes are In....Go with the MOE.

You won't regret it.

Aim small,

PS. Now that we have decided you need the MOE...don't forget it comes in all Black or Flat Dark Earth (Black and Tan) Magpul accessaries.

I have the Hogue grip on my Winchester 1300 using a Mesa Tactical High Mount Adapter. My plan was to put the same grip on my 15-22 plus the MBUS sights. I like being able to fold the sight down when using the red dot scope or any scope w/o having to remove the sights.

I'm a bit old school and have never trained with a co-witness setup. So for my taste, adding the grip and Magpul sights would cost a lot more. Plus, I like the Magpul grip better than the factory grip, it felt good, good enough to keep. Now, whether you go with a Black rifle or dark earth is on you.

grimreaper21's situation would have been tempting though....
