I just sent a new (brand new) 627 Pro back to S&W using their pre paid shipping label to get the barrel crown repaired. I should say finished.

It is a shame the crown was so rough and uneven, I don't know how it got out of the factory like that.

The powder fouling after about 250 rounds through the gun wasn't the typical star pattern from the rifling you'd see on a proper barrel crown. it was a ragged pattern. The guns groups were pretty lousy too, and I was doing my part.

I am hoping the S&W service dept. will repair the crown to the precision cut it should be. I am pretty disapointed. This 627 is the first S&W I own with a recessed crown, I figured it would be as clean as my other Smiths, and all of their crowns are fine. ...I'm kinda wishing the 627 just had the regular barrel end instead of the recess.

I have a Savage rifle, and Ruger MKIII's with recessed crowns and they are sharp and clean, with the powder fouling on the end a nice star pattern from the rifling. The new smith had the rifling sticking out past where they cut for the recess, and what was sticking out was not even, a couple of the barrels rifling "lands?" stuck out further than the rest and they would catch and snag cleaning patches.

I started poking around on the net for pics to see if anybody else had a similar condition, and I was surprised to find both old and new posts with lousy barrel crowns on Smiths. Made me a little uneasy... I need some good news.

Any ideas on what I should expect to get back? I sure am hoping the service dept. will see this as the **** job the barrel had done to it and they will make it as it should be. This is the first time I had to send anything back to S&W.

Thanks for reading, and for any input!

Have faith-

S&W's plan seems to be to push products out the door with no real QA inspection, and then fix them if the customer notices.

I recently bought a PC revolver that was a mess-it had multiple obvious cosmetic and functional problems.

S&W fixed it correctly when I sent it in, with about a three week turn around.

Now it is great!

My revolver arrived back from S&W the way it should have shipped from the factory the first time.

Thanks!

Thanks for that nofishbob.

That is good to hear that it came back tip top.

Yeah, unfortunately, that is what I figured is going on. The quality control section was probably let go to save $$, and like you said, if people notice, they come back and get fixed right.

At some point though, you would think S&W (and all the other manufacturers with the same Q/C view) would realize it would be beneficial to turn the product out from production in top condition. Save all the bad news about quality from circulating.

That said, I'm an example of why they do it I guess. I saw pics and posts about poor barrel crowns and triggers and I still bought one.

The other thing about getting stuck with a bad one is, where I live, there is nothing in stock or on the shelf to look at and judge whether the quality is there or not.

I nearly always have to order one in, and hope for the best. If I see one or two things that aren't right I still take the item and send it back for repairs, and I know what I have at that point.

Refusing it and having another one sent sometimes prolongs the anxiety of the wait 'cause the next one to show up probably has issues as well.

I feel better hearing that it should come back and be in solid shape.

Thanks!

I just took delivery last Friday on a new Model 41, took it to the range Sunday, shooting at 7 yards off the bench.

It was shooting 2-1/2" left at 7 yds., attempting to adjust sights I ran out of adjustment after 4 clicks, now it shoots about 1-3/4" left at 7 yds.

Took it to local gunsmith he says the adjustment screw is stripped, when he measured the location of the sight blade notch in relationship to the barrel he said that the sight was just slighty offcenter of the barrel. I'm wondering how many clicks it would have to move to hit center. I was shooting Remington Target Loads and they were grouping pretty good.

Does this seem typical of new products from the factory?

I only have one other option for you concerning your situation, and that is to make your next purchase using Davidson's Gun Genie
Davidson's is the only company (Distributor) to offer their own guarantee which generally means if you are unhappy with that gun, they will send a pick-up and another gun of the same model to the dealer you picked it up from originally.
Last month a customer bought a Kel-Tec P-11, after shooting it he found he could not hit the paper with it reliably at 15 feet. He brought it back to me, Davidsons sent me another one, different series of serial # and I swapped him out. I don't know if the new one works better (Yet) but I did see Davidson's warranty in action and it was Fast.

I did buy the gun through Davidsons. I was going to send it back, but I had seen pics and read posts where others had the same poor looking barrel crown and I figured the time it'd take to get another one sent, (and the next one might be the same or worse than the first), I can probably have the original sent back to S&W and get it fixed right.

It is back at S&W now, I'll post how it turns out when I get her back.

Thanks for the post though!

**UPDATE**

Just got my 627 Pro back from S&W repair center. Email said it went to "PCFA", so I guess that was the Performance Center.

Great job!! As well as a fast turnaround, out and back within 2 weeks.

They recrowned the barrel and now it is smooth inside of the recess. They replaced the trigger and hammer and it is like wet ice now. Nice!

It came back with a new rear sight with a taller blade on it, I don't know why... I have not shot it yet, but I'm gonna' as soon as I can. I think it is tip top now. Now it looks and feels like a "Pro Series" gun.

Also a nice touch, they added a nice bunch of moonclips, due to I told them how there were none in the box when I received it new... (I am not kidding about that, they weren't in the box)

So, good news about S&W warr. repair. I am satisfied.

I purchased a PC627 in February that had the crown burr, cylinder stop not dropping completely (causing to action to lock occasionally), and the hammer rubbing the frame. Sent it back 2/22. Received it back today. It took 10 days door to door. S&W replaced the barrel, cylinder stop and spring, and hammer. I'll test it out tomorrow. S&W did OK in my book.
