Gratuitous 28-2 pic, with sambar and a T-grip.

I sold my 627Pro and purchased what I call my "Birthday Gun". Made in 1975 (year I was born) according to the serial number. This 28-2 appears to have been fired very little as the finish is at least 98%. Has a turn line but no holster wear and absolutely gorgeous, dark S&W grips. I love it.

Scope?

Last week I saw a 28-2 HP with a scope mounted on it. What's up with that? I did not look it over very carefully (not sure what type of scope) but I was wondering if that is a bad thing in terms of the value? The guy had it priced at $575.

I wouldn't pay $575 for ANY 28 that had holes drilled in it for a scope mount. In fact, I'd be hard-pressed to pay that kind of money for a Highway Patrolman at all. That's getting close to Model 27 territory...

My first Highway Patrolman

I just picked this 28-2 up from my FFL today. Got from an online auction as a Buy It Now for $350 plus shipping. It has the typical muzzle wear and signs of use but it's perfect otherwise. It locks up tight and has a nice trigger. I am very happy with it so far. Have not shot it yet.

I have a set of Ahrends Retro Combat grips on the way. They should look great on this revolver.:D

The Serial is N9506xx, so it's a very late one. I was wanting an older one but next time I will be more pickey.

OK, I'm confused:confused:. My new to me 28-2 is clearly marked 28-2 and the serial number is clearly N9506xx. The gun is also pinned and recessed. Should that late number not belong to a non P&R dash 3? What gives?

They only did these in four or six inch and yet I keep coming back to look at each and every one. They all seem to have their own character. I have been coming back off and on to this thread and I still like what I see every time.

Your serial number falls in the 82-86 year range. The 28-3 started in 1982 so yes I would think yours should have been a 28-3 and not pinned and recessed but then with S&W you just never know.

I will add 3 more to the list:

S1343XX, 6", 5 screw, 1954
S1857XX, 4", 4 screw, 1958
N1133XX, 6" 1973

That's interesting. Thanks for the info. Is it just a matter of them having left over parts?

I've got one as well

Mines a 28-2 6" SN# N2275xx

Roy Jinks tells me it shipped August of 1975.

About a 90% Came with box and papers, except the serial on the box is about 50 numbers off the gun.
How did that happen??
I'll keep it anyway.

Have fun.

Not my first S&W but my first post here and my first Model 28

Picked this up last week. Guy at the store said that he got it from the widow of a Highway Patrolman. It's a 28-2 sn# N257*** Maybe 1975-76? It's been shot but is pretty tight.

Probably won't be my last, this thing is a sweet shooter.

Thanks for a great informitive forum to all that post here

Just settled a deal for MY FIRST H.P.

I'm happy! I've been wanting one of these for a while but they are scarce (and expensive) down here. All I could do was watch at your Highway Patrolmans and envy you guys. Now all I'll envy is the prices you pay for them, as these beauties are priced here at least two times what they are worth in the US.

Ok, it's a shooter and it has some blemishes. I can live with that, it was harder to live without a decent Highway Patrolman. :o
It's a 28-2, serial S306287, according to the SCSW shipped in 1968.
As the owner lives 1000 miles away, all I have at this moment are these pictures :(

It is a very late 28-2, especially to be P&R but, it is in the 'range'. There are lower serial numbers that don't have pinned barrels but the first 28-3 did seem to show up until the N955xxx range.

Just as a point of reference, my father's 28-2 Highway Patrolman 4" carries a serial number of S3054xx. According to Roy Jinks, it left the factory in January, 1968. Looks like yours was shipped not long after that - I'm guessing February, 1968.
