The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

S&W 629 in Highway Patrolman Serial # Range

I have a 4" and 6" S&W 629s with serial numbers, N934XXX and N936XXX which are in, but at the end, of the serial number range of M28. Is this common to have other model guns mixed in with the serial number ranges for the M28? Thanks.

I have a Minty 6 inch M28 but have always wanted a 4 inch, I have to start searching!

This was purchased NIB by my wife around 84 or 85 best we can remember. She bought it to take a saftey class at our local Sherrif's Department. It's a 28-3, #N955xxx. Great shooter. Some lines on cylnder and a few scratches. I just found the original wood grips in the garage last year. First try on this forum with photos.

28s and pre 28s

Just picked up the pre-28 6", time to take a pic! Also, I thought the 6" pre was tougher to find than the 4". SN for pre 6" is S130650 and it has the custom RR and WO with "Jim Battles" professionally engraved on the frame under the grips. The work appears done very nicely. SN for the pre 4" is S120811, the 4" is S307496, and the 6" is N298054.

All have their correct boxes.

PHB, that is a great looking shooter. I would honor it with some Ahrends but the rubber is more with ease for shooting. I would love to have a gun hard chromed. Did you buy it that way or have it done???

I bought it that way and I know the grips stink I just have not done much with it since I bought it they said it was no good for pin shooting I had to prove them wrong of all the 357 I have this is the most enjoyable to shoot lot of nice looking 28;s on this thread

Mine is a 28-2, SN N149XX. It was fairly beat. Its now a round-butt chambered in 45ACP. It has a Nelson Ford action job and trigger stop. Ugly, but runs perfect. Next to the Colt 70 Series 45 Auto, this is the handgun I shoot the most.

My 2 model 28-2's, 4" from 1967 with factory target grips, mint gun, hardly been fired, it's only real flaw is sometime in it's 44 year life someone felt the need to file the tip of the front sight off. 6" from 1978 has some wear on the edges of the cylinder and muzzle but has low mileage as well.

28-2, 4"

This is my latest, purchased from a member. Serial # N452XX. Good shooter but has had some rough treatment! Stocks aren't original.

You folks have some nice guns posted here. I have my dads 28-2 with a 4" barrel that I got after he passed away 8 years ago. He never shot it. Just loaded it and put it in his nightstand. I have had it for over 8 years and I have never shot it either. Someday I will have to change that.

Unfortunately he didn't believe in keeping boxes or paperwork. Oh well, you can't have everything.

Markings on the yoke

Can anyone explain their meaning? I know the numbers are to keep each gun parts together in the assembly line, What about the C, the W and that "square thing"?

Regards, Alejandro.
