I'm just hoping the moving around while shooting stuff changes this into a normal-sized man with a 66 by next year

I've only been at this since March but for that match they dispensed with concealment due to heat.
My truck registered 104 degrees when I got back to it post match. Humidity was bad too. I suspect the heat index touched on 110.
I drank 5 bottles of water between 9am and 2pm yet still got woozy when I got home.
After a quart of Gatorade my headache subsided.

I shoot IDPA regularly at two different ranges. One club dispenses with Concealment garments when it reaches 90 degrees.
The other club requires us to wear them always. Match Director says if you only wear it while shooting it will be less than 15 minutes for the entire match, I tend to agree with him.

Seriously. It doesn't take any miraculously (or laboriously) derived skill. Just go slow and focus on being safe. You'll find that if you set aside the drive to win, and concentrate on being smooth and safe, you'll have a fantastic time.
If you go to a local IDPA or IPSC match, and tell the other shooters/range officers, this is your first time, and then later you are still new at this, you will be surprised at how friendly and helpful everyone will be.

Good for you! At our match, when it's hot as blazes we sometimes let cover slide, but as a previous poster pointed out, if you only wear it when you're actually shooting, it's not that long. I use an unlined cotton safarai coat for my cover and it works well, not too heavy and more realistic (i think) cover than some of the other stuff I see being used.

I'm also a fat guy with a 2.5" 66. I love shooting it in a local "self defense" match we have. It's probably the funnest gun I have, but I just shot a 14-3 in a match for the 1st time yesterday and it was a blast too.
Gatorade works! We don't get the humidity that you guys do for as long as you do, but this summer was absolutely brutal. I shot a match in Tulsa that hit 112 on the car's thermometer. I was storing my gun in a black zip up gun rug. We had to wait on another squad and was out in the sun. When I finally got to shoot I literally could not hold the gun it was so hot. I had them put me down a couple of shooters and dropped it into my ice chest. No lie!
Also shot Area 4 in Wichita Falls, TX and it was a scorcher the first day. Gatorade is the only way I get through these matches at all and still occasionally have some mental mistakes in planning and execution due solely to the heat. Be careful...

I know a fat guy with a 4" 686. He'll even beat a few bottom feeder EXperts now and again.
