I found and purchased a orange, non-drop free, factory high cap Glock 23 mag today. Anybody know what they were made for?

For a short while Glock was making the whole magazine orange, but they figured out that they only really needed to make the baseplate orange. I bought mine for my 10mm G20 at the Indianapolis GSSF shoot, and they had cases and cases of them for sale there... They were labeled training magazines, and the story was that they were originally being marketed to LE depts for dedicated training mags, rather than using duty mags.

It's a little known fact that the ORANGE Glock mags were developed especially for Navy Seal snipers to use during arctic missions in Greenland during the Panama invasion. Navy seal sniper found when they used their Glocks to take targets past 345 meters that they would end up dropping their mags in the snow. The black factory mags blended perfectly with penguin poop, and Seal armorers got tired of cleaning out Glocks that had been stuffed with two pounds of penguin poop.....a contract was let to develop a magazine color that would not be confused with the poop of any known bear or penguin, and orange was selected....orange mags are worth a premium of $300 per mag, as the springs are developed especially for tropical conditions and the baseplates are actually molded polymer.......

Yeah, just don't drop the thing in field of pumpkins.

They made them orange so they wouldn't grow legs, and it looks like they did anyway.

So much for banning orange Glock mags.

I bought an orange mag during "the ban" for a G21. They were roughly half the price of a black mag. Was told they were training mags.

They were for "Less than Lethal" ammo.

As others have said I think they were intended to be used during training, possibly with Simunition.

This stuff fires a colored, waxy marking-type bullet and is used with guns that are modified so they will function with it, if semi-auto. It is useful for role-playing scenarios and really gets you thinking.

We only used it in training one time. You are instructed to wear long sleeve BDU type clothing over your uniform shirt and you are also provided with a face shield. It stings a little if you are hit in a place with inadequate protection.

It was also explained to us that someone had been inadvertently "stung" in an unfortunate location during a previous session. This prompted the guys in the class to scour the training facility for magazines, pieces of cardboard or some other field-expedient method of enhancing their protective measures.

Said magazines, etc. were then installed where they would (hopefully) do the most good, i.e, inside the front of the trousers below the belt line.

A good time was had by all and I think I will leave it at that. :D

I just got back to the parsonage a while ago. Bad day. But, my wife had gotten home ahead of me. And... she'd cooked fried shrimp and baked seasoned potatoes and had fresh tea ready! And... after supper I sit down for a little relaxation reading the usually intelligent postings here at the S&W Forum... and I run up on This post! What a hoot! Really great way to wind up a long day. Thanks. bruce.

Former University of Tennessee football players use them whilst doing drive bys.
They're fairly common to find under a seat in a used Escalade or Hummer here in TN...

Those are for the tie-dyed concealed carry group in Asheville, NC. :p They had a special run of them made just for them, but can also be found in other trendy cities like Miami and Seattle.

I also think a lot of surf shops in Florida sold those mags for surfers that want something to match their ensemble.
Kayaker types got the yellow ones, they are more rare.

Q: What do you have when you have a retro-glock?

A: A glock. :D

Man! I would love to have one of those! Especially rare if you have the matching serial numbered orange Glock to go with it. Those things were custom made by Glock for the University of Tennessee campus police. They only made enough for the police force, and maybe a couple more for gifts to the University. They are incredibly difficult to find outside of Knoxville. Yours must have come from an estate sale or something. No one in their right mind would ever part with one of these rare gems!
