Times Square like today? I was last there in 1965 while in the Service. It seemed like a red light district back then. Lots of pimps, trashy sidewalks etc. Me and a buddy went into the New Amsterdam theater to see Arsenic and Old Lace. Lucky to escape with our virtue intact.

Has the area gotten any better? We may be taking a short trip to NYC and I want to show Mary where I spent some time, if it's cleaned up.

It is very nice now if you like that sort of thing, you know tons of people. It is lit up like it is day time all night long with police on almost every corner.

No red light district anymore, they got rid of the porn in the mid 90's. It is very tourist safe now.

Yes, much different now than it was years ago. I'm not a New Yorker, but have been there a number of times since the 70s. To me, it definitely used to be a dirty, crowded, kinda sleazy place, but always interesting. Back then, felt much more like there were mostly locals (good and bad elements), business people, and the whole theater, bar/restaurant thing, as well as the electronic shops. Never had a very 'safe' feel to me, especially at night.

Since Giuliani (SP?) cleaned it up in the late 90s, it has a much, much different feel (where did all the scumbags go...?) To me, it now has a Las Vegas, touristy kind of feel, especially during the summer). No more red light area, lots and lots of big lit signs/massive video screen, street vendors/artists all over the place, lots of tourists walking around in the summer looking around in awe. Still very crowded... Of course still the theater, bar/restaurant scene is still going on in Times Square. On the weekend, there a lots of street fairs, etc. nearby. Just a much more enjoyable, safer-feeling, cleaner, place to be now.

And that's just Times Square. The whole Soho, Village, Chelsea, etc. districts are similarly much different, and much 'nicer'. That's just my observations, and opinion, YMMV. It certainly has a bunch of issues, but NYC really is an amazing, wold class city, if you take the time to explore/learn about it. That being said, I'm very happy to visit occasionally, and not live there! ;)

Times Square has always had the

So, next time I'm in NYC, where should I go for my porn???!!!

Smith, I am aghast that you would insinuate that I have any interest in porn! How dare you! I have a beautiful, loving wife. I am a church going family man. Please sir, never respond to any of my posts again!

Sorry buddy, the wife was looking over my shoulder. They moved most of it to 3rd Ave. in Brooklyn. One of the best is on 27st. Tell em I sent ya. :)

Dmar, I'm glad you mentioned the Village. I spent some time there also. I especially remember getting ripped off (price wise) at a place called The Wha? cafe. I wonder if it's still there? I saw it years back in a movie called The Presidents Analyst.

I would rather beat on my toes with a ball peen hammer than spend one minute or spend one cent in New York City. If the Second Amendment is ever reinstated there, then I might change my mind.

The 2nd amendment has been gone in NY for 100 years, the 1911 Sullivan law.

I lived and worked in NYC during the 70s and 80s. Times Square was an absolute cesspool back then. Then Marriott kicked off the refurb. of TS by building the Marquis and by the end of the 90s TS was totally different. This achievement was due in large part to Rudy Guiliani who just decided to clean the streets up and move the derelects somewhere else,i.e. he violated their 'civil rights' to lay around filthy and smelly.

Penn Station used to be so full of junkies at night in the winter you couldn't walk through. Rudy rousted 'em out.

Now you just have to worry about running out of money.

FYI....plenty of people pack even if it's not legal.

Coming from the guy in California.

The Cafe Wha. Yup, it's still plugging away on MacDougal street. Who did you see perform?

Absolutely one of my favorite movies!

Apart from the hilarious story line and fabulous performances by James Coburn, Godfrey Cambridge and Severn Darden, it's got a great jazz soundtrack.

And the ultimate villain is so appropriate if you've ever worked in IT.

As has been said Rudi cleaned up midtown. I used to work on W44'th right off of Times Square. It is very different from what you remember. Personally I could care less if I ever go back into the city again. Then again I'm just biding my time until I can move out of the People's Republic and get to someplace like central PA, NC, SC or WV. Perhaps someplace out west like Utah or Montana. Oh well, someday.

After 46 years I've forgotten the name of the group. I vaguely remember a Peter, Paul & Mary type sound, which is appropriate to the time.
I also remember a dish of ice cream that cost $4.00. I don't know what that is in todays dollars but it was outrageous back then. But I guess live music with no cover kind of makes up for it.

I can't begin to express my distain for Times Square. There's nothing you can do there that you can't do in any mall in the US. And the mall is infinately cheaper. It's only cleaned up on the surface. Most of the street peddlers, i.e. handbag vendors, comedy club hawkers, aspiring rappers et al are perps. They'll either try to sell you drugs or straight up rob you when none of the 100 cops in the area are looking. A year or two ago one of the peddlers pulled a Tec-9 on a Sergeant from Midtown South right in front of the Marriott Marquis at about noon. The Sergeant won, but the horror show that could have been is very scary. I advise everyone to stay away from Times Square, it's beyond over rated and there is still that criminal element, however pretty they make it look.
