Asked the dealer to get me an M&P340 today. They said it was on S&W's 'discontinued list', and they didn't have one in the wearhouse nor was it available from their distributors. So....I took the one from the display case, and got a pretty fair discount.

So what to assume? One would imagine it is a pretty good seller. True, it's twice the price of a 442/642, but they are .38 only. Less money than a 340PD, and a stainless cylinder, so you don't have to worry about any cylinder etching from light bullets/hot loads possible with titanium. A bit heavier than the 340PD, but I can live with that couple extra oz when firing .357's. Night sights, which none of the others have, was a huge + for me!

It is a 'no dash', so can we assume there will be a -1, or that it is being eliminated from the lineup?

Makes little sense to me to get rid of the M&P without also canning the PD. The sight and steel cylinder make the M&P more practical, in my opinion.

It seems like a mistake on someone's part...

I say no way would they eliminate this from their lineup..

If they were scaling down and eliminating 20 or 30 firearms from their lineup...then maybe, but I think a miscommunication is happening here...

Davidson's lists 5 in stock, and Lipsey's doesn't show it as discontinued, so I think they wanted to move the one in the glass case.

No, these guys don't have any reason to pull any ****. I deal wth them all the time. It is a huge chain with a huge wearhouse and maybe 20 stores in the area, so if they couldn't find me one, it has to be the real deal.

My guess is that there is a -1 on the way.

I say good. Never really got they would make a light weight snub nose in a 357 mag. I was shooting .38 +p+ out of my airweight today during qualifications and it was rocking my hand to hell and back. Can't even think of what a 357 in a lighter gun would do to my hand

Same thing we always did with the K-frame M19/66 back in the day....Sight it in with .357's. Practice with .38's, but load .357's for a dire emergency. When it's life and death, the recoil won't even be noticed.

Imagine a stout 200lb guy smacking you in the palm with a baseball bat and you'll have a pretty good idea. :-)

off road,

Congrats on scoring a 340PD at a great price.

I'm confused, however. Is the shop you have been dealing with now telling you that the 340PD is being discontinued?

thats funny, just because some HUGE chain doesnt have it doesn't mean its discontinued from S&W, but let me check with my S&W rep........not a distributor

my question to my S&W LE rep

"are the 340PD and 340MP discontinued, either of these get dropped by S&W, 340pd or MP340?

reply from Corino

"no, not at alll John," "lead time is about a month"

so they make them as the orders come in or may have one

he told me a distributor asked the same question ;)

problem is most people know someone who has one.....and shot it....not the best selling point. Last 340PD we had was 3 years in the shop! frankly as an owner/shooter of that gun I had a hard time selling it, so luckily the OR Shop needed it :) I ordered a M&P340 and got it in less than a month(say 9 months ago) The M&P is a better all around choice IMOP

Its a hard sell(and I don't hard sell....not even close) when you have a 442/642/and the rest at $350 and a 340PD at $700 when for most all the $350 version is a better choice

again I carry and shoot a 340PD.....15rds at a time...... then I am in a fetal position blabbering ball asking for MOTHER :D

Which was never as good of an idea as we thought it was at the time......

meaning that distributor wont order them for their stock, I cant blame them, but they are not discontinued

Landpimp,

Thank you very much for the information.

I think that the Scandium/Aluminum alloy Airlite series are great guns. I agree with you that the biggest problem is their price when compared to Airweights.

My point in doing this post, was simply to warn those who might want to pick one up now while they still can....

What the actual facts are about future production of the PD....only time will tell for sure! My experience in my line of work, is that distributors and even reps, frequently get it wrong! I will certainly try to get more information on exactly what the 'discontinued list' is, and even try to get a link or a copy.

In any case, the good news for now is that the fine little M&P isn't going anywhere!
