I have both the sand paper and rubber texture grips on pistols and on those that have a lot of recoil or pistols you fire a lot of rounds out of, the sand paper ones can eat at your hands after a while. My hands are pretty tough, but after a good while of shooting smaller guns in particular, the sandpaper bothers me a bit.
Then again, if it's real hot/humid, the rubber adhesive add on grips can get slippery when you sweat. I typically custom cut mine (sand paper and rubber) so that not as much surface is covered as they offer, which helps overall.
On the other hand, I like a bit of the sandpaper on top of bright stainless slides, where glare under bright conditions can potentially be a bit of a problem. I also have used the sand paper in thin strips, in the serrated areas where you grip to rack the slides, although the handsome scalloped grips on the M&P's slides don't warrant that IMO.
