9MM Gold Dot - 124gr vs 125gr

I asked this on another forum but value the experience found here also.

Speer 9mm Gold Dots # 3998 vs # 4360

The 124gr is back ordered all the time but the 125gr is in stock, so that's what I ordered.

So what is the real difference between them?

One is marketed toward 9mm and the other 357sig/38 super but they will obviously interchange. The 124 BC is .134 vs .141 and the SD is almost the same .141/.142

So is there anything I need to take into consideration when loading the 125gr Gold Dot in a 9mm case?

The only things I can think that would be different is maybe the bullet OAL is slightly different and the design velocity for expansion might be higher in the 125gr, but I can't find any info on that.

Why don't you ask Speer?

They could compensate for higher velocities with: smaller hollowpoint, harder lead alloy and/or thicker jacket. That the BC is slightly different hints at a different ogive (nose shape) that allows an extra grain of weight.

Yes from their site graphic, the olgive looks slightly more rounded on the 125gr. I am curious as to the design velocity.

I believe the hollow point cavity in the 125gr is shallower than the 124gr. The 125gr was designed for use in the .357 SIG and needed a shallower cavity to prevent the bullet from basically shredding apart from the higher velocity of the .357 SIG versus 9x19.

For the factory loaded ammo, I can't find any 9mm at 125gr, just 124gr. The .38 special and .357 are 125gr. The Short Barrel ammo has a larger cavity for better expansion at lower velocity. If I were going to use the 125gr stuff, first ask Speer, it would seem if I was going to use them, I'd load for +P to get enough velocity to get the expansion.

The 125gr Gold Dot is loaded in their 357sig offering.
It is rated at 1379 fps vs 1235 for the 124gr +P 9mm

I don't think I a 9mm can make that velocity safely. I'll see if I can get some info from Speer then post my findings.

I'm fairly sure the bullet velocity rating it the Max recommended velocity, not the Min.
