Ok more money into the EBR, seeing as I pretty well have it figured that I am going to stay with larger scopes I have decided that the A2 front sight has to go. Because I really dont do mag dumps I figure that I can get by with a Magpul front sight (folding). It wont be getting hot enough to melt the way I shoot. The question is (and I searched the forum before I asked this) what gas block w/at least upper rail would you all recommend. I have the pin punches and have been searching for railed gas blocks, there are so many and what height do I need to shoot for? Thanks Again for letting me borrow from your experiences

Well I bit the bullet, I bought a gas block and a Magpul folding front sight Gen 1. This Danged EBR disease is gonna get me in trouble! Although I spent less than $40 on the pair. Here is the pic of the gas block I purchased:

gonna have to buy some more blue loctite, it seems that there is becoming less and less of my stock sport, and more and more of my fantasy AR... So when TSHTF&TEOFWAWKI happens. living out here in the wide open flatlands of western Kansas I will be able to stop the Zombies before I can smell them!!! LOL

Polymer MBUS + hot metal gas block = Melting/burning bad day.

You'll need a metal folding front sight.

I didn't read this part. Sorry. Been a stressful day at work. I guess it might work out. There's one sure way to find out. :)

Now that you have your 15-Sport set up for long distance, time to get a SBR tax stamp & build shorty CQB.

Which block did you get? Is it steel? The aluminum ones are more prone to coming loose as steel and aluminum expands at different rates as it heats up. If you shoot conservatively and don't get it to hot its a non issue.

I got the T6 6061 Aluminum. oops but I do shoot conservatively. The only high speed shooting I did was when I was shooting up my russian steel ammo other than that I have never smoked my barrel or bcg. I hope I am ok..if not well another learning experience. Although I hate to make stupid mistakes but sometimes I do. My shooting tends to be slow deliberate shots, you know the old adage one shot one kill.

I have only R&R'd it one time and then felt guilty about wasting ammo...LOL But thank you and I will keep my eye on it...go to the Long Distance Thread and you will see why I felt I needed to do it at this time.

Crude but effective

I was debating about which gas block to install on my Sport. Couldn't make my mind up and cash was a bit short at the time.
Also, I'd read how difficult the S&W gas block could be to get loose.

So, Mr. Dreaded Dremel tool came out and I cut the top of the A2 sight off. The pic I attached is the rough cut. I polished and coated the modified block with high temp flat black paint. The end result was quite satisfactory both in fit and function. I figure if I want iron sights, I can attach the front sight to the quad rail I installed. I also figure that I could replace the front A2/gas block if necessary.

It's fun.

Yea but a MI gas block is 69 and a MI folding front sight is 99 and it is super solid. When I do a complete build it is on my list of needs.

Hobie, I remember you telling us about that and yes it looks good, I wanted the ability to go back to irons when I go out to play with the boys. I have my scope on a QD mount and just want the ability, just in case the zombies come within 100 yards. but Dude that does look sweet and I promise you I was thinking hard about the dremel and a cut off wheel and I definately would get rid of the silly bayonet mount, I never wanted to get into a bayonet situation when I was in and now that I am older, bayonet, nope more bullets. But I have kept that pic in the back of my mind cause it worked and looked good.

Oneye,
Bought the same gas block as you. Have yet to install it as I cant decied on which front sight to go with. With the price of the magpul, if it does melt...oh well. Sounds like our shooting styles are the same, I rarely go apesh*t with it.

Here is another solution that I saw in a magazine and had to check out.

ARMS 41-B-L Folding A2 Front Sight Gas Block w/Bao-lug #ARMS-41-BL -

My LGS has that front sight on one of their custom built ARs. It's pretty sweet. To have them install it on my Sport would run me a little under $250.

Normally I'm pretty confident in my mechanical skills, but I'm more cautious when it come to my firearms...although I did replace my stock trigger with a Geissele SSA. But FCG pins are easy to take out. Lol

Hobie,
Which muzzle brake did you put on your rifle and what power scope are you running?

Ok when you take your flash hider off to install the gas block do you need to use a new crush washer to reinstall it? And also would someone please remind me which side the pins come out of, the head is bigger on the left side which makes me believe that the come out right to left but I could be wrong.

You are correct right to left (which is backwards from the norm)
