How did I do? 586 no dash

Hi all. I'm a new S&W owner and I'm wondering how I did on my first S&W. I've been a semi-auto guy up to now. I recently went into my local gun store looking for an M&P 45 (none in stock) and I wound up buying a 4" 586 no dash (no "M" stamp) in about 95% condition. I paid $550 for it in Southern California. Did I make out OK or did I really overpay?

Can anyone recommend a non-thumb strap leather holster for this gun? The only thing I have been able to find so far is the Galco Combat Master. I'd like to run this gun at my next steel match in April. I already upgraded the grips to Pachmayr Grippers, so as soon as I find a holster I'll be ready to compete in the revolver division.

There are several holster makers who could do a nice job for you.

I made a trade for a 586 no dash from another member a few weeks ago. Very clean, under 50 rounds fired. 1983 gun. 1 grip was slightly damaged, but I fixed it so you can hardly tell. It is accurate! Shooting steel plates at 30 yards. Great trigger! You should really enjoy yours! Bob

I'll second that without a doubt, Ray at Lobo will fix you up. His Askins Avenger with the reinforced mouth for easy re-holstering would be perfect for your 586 and matches. I've placing an order for that model for my new BHP Practical I'm going to use for IPSC. Have one for my Colt Commander and love it. Can do double duty as a CC holster and makes for quick draws. I'm not into Kydex at all. Make sure you get a reinforced mouth or you'll have a hard time getting it back in after firing. Talking from experience and the shool of hard knocks here.

The 586 is my most accurate S&W! I never had the "M" mod done to it and it's been trouble free in over 20k rounds. I've shot the living **** out of it, mostly .38's and it's still tight and lightning accurate.

Congrats on your 586! $20.00 says it's a tack driver and you picked a great model for competition, hunting or self defense.

Good price on a great gun! You picked a perfect 1st revolver. You may find that if you can shoot a revolver well you can shoot anything. Work with my revolvers improves my shooting with my autos. I do get spoiled with the triggers on my revolvers though.

Thanks, that is exactly the type of holster I am looking for. I may have to order one for my 1911 at the same time.

Welcome to the Forum. I'm glad to see that your over the recent "fad" of autoloaders which is bound to end soon.

However you did terrible. You have punished yourself to forever lusting for more S&W revolvers and especially the L-Frames.

I almost lost myself to the L-Frame lust and had four M586s, two 4 inchers and two 6 inchers, in blue and nickel each. I was about to head into the abyss and start buying M686s in 2 1/2, 3 (if I could find one), 4 and 6 inch barrels. But I stopped short.

I sold the two blued M586s and bought only one M686 with the 2 1/2 inch barrel. I am now cured of the lust..............I think..............

I may be in the minority in the outside gunworld but I consider a well-tuned M586/686 a better revolver than any Colt Python made.

As far a holsters go, the Safariland 567 (or 568) are good and usually in stock at Midway. Also, the Blade-tech kydex offerings are good for competition.

I bought it at Faith Armory. He actually has 5 or 6 other pre-lock smiths in his case at the moment.

In Western PA that is a $550 to $575 gun guaranteed. Very nice.

One thing to remediable with any synthetic or rubber grips is to take them off from time to time, especially if you have shot a lot in hot weather. Moisture gets trapped under the grips and causes nasty rust and pitting. I have a couple stainless guns that had factory rubber and the previous owners had never pulled the grips. Nasty pitting, even on stainless.

You have a great revolver now, go enjoy the heck out of it!!
