Got to a show in Montrose Co. late today just as it was closing. I guy had an excellent condition 5" 27-2 on his table with some nice stags on it. No box or docs with it. I asked him what he wanted for it and he said $875 with the stags on it but he would take $675 without the grips. Given todays prices, is that too much to pay for an excellent condition 5" 27-2 without grips? I have several sets that I could put on it including a nice set of ivories with medalions.

I don't think $675, sans grips, is out of line compared to what I've seen recently. If a 5" 27-2 is on your short list, I'd probably go for it. Let us know what you decide, and you know - we like pictures!

Unless the stags are spectacular, I would just go for it sans stocks. Sounds like a decent price to me, but maybe you could offer $600 and see what he says?

If you just plan to display it ("safe queen" it), you may want to just install wood stocks that fit your hand. If I was actually shooting or carrying one with nice ivories on it, I couldn't stop worring about damaging them.

I just sold a 1979 in the presentation box unfired with all the tools and documents for $1,000.00.

I would say that is a fair price without the grips for a high excellent gun, maybe 95%, with nice original blueing, very slight edge wear, a tight lock-up, and everything else checks out OK.

Exactly. It would be better to invest a little more money and get a nice gun like this one.
A 27-2 with NOTHING else is in reality just a shooter and should be priced accordingly.

Too much in this part of the country.

Well if you can point me toward one in you area for sale for less I'd appreciate the "heads up" ! The 5" models are not easy to find around here . . . .

It's a very popular revolver and that's a decent price for it without the stag grips.

That's pretty value laden: to some of us a firearm is first and foremost a shooter. The box, paperwork, and period correct grips are of little or no value to users who need a good shooter. For the difference between $1000 and $675, one could be well on the way to a decent amount of factory ammo or a handloading setup. As far as I know, I have no wood grips on any of my S&Ws. They have nearly no utility to me. As much as I like revolvers, and want to improve the selection I have, the reality is that for most uses I have for a sidearm, a semi-auto is a far better choice. When I want a revolver, and I have carried one as a duty weapon (I even still have a Safariland 070 holster for my 4" M58), it is as a fighting tool. The box, papers, etc are not productive for that. My M296 is a fanny pack gun, and used mainly when walking the dogs, in case I need to protect them, since a contact shot would be the choice. That's kind of like a uniformed LE backup gun.

I have other things I need to do with my money right now, or I would be on a $675 gripless 5" M27 shooter like stink on poop.

Yes, the 5" models are not easy to find around here either. That does not justify a collector grade price for a shooter grade gun.

If anybody disagrees, no problem. I will sell one of the two I own with no grips, no box, and no paperwork for $1599.99. Includes shipping!

My point is that price must justify the product. I try to sell at fair prices (the above example excluded) and try to buy at fair prices. A typical model 27 of any bbl length with no grips is a $500 gun on a good day.

675.00 for one I just bought.Really nice gun,but no box papers, etc.Still happy with it.
