Thought I'd throw up three of my four 686's. The top is a 686-5 I recently picked up, and the Altamont round combat grips (not sure if I like the color tho) . The middle and bottom are both 686+'s. The middle is a 686-6 Talo 3-inch, and the bottom is a 686-5 2.5-inch with Ahrends grips.

I purchased all of them used. With the savings in tax and the "used" pricing, I figure I'm about $700 ahead of purchasing them new.

I am surprised to say that the 2.5 is my favorite shooter. Great pointer and surprisingly accurate.

The 686 is one fine revolver....

(As for the fourth, it's a stock 686-6 plus 4", and is my nightstand HD gun. No fancy fixin's....

Great pics of some great guns. I just traded last month for a 686-4 2 1/2 inch. It is becoming one of my favorite revolvers. I like my 19's but this L frame is very nice and a fantastic shooter. I like the 3 inch Talo. Now I am looking for L frames when I go prowling. Thanks for sharing.

Here is my recently purchased 686-6. My wife absolutely loves shooting it with .38 Special. It is a Davidson's special with a S&W Performance Center trigger job and has one of the smoothest triggers I've ever pulled.

The one gun i regret selling off more than any other was a 686 Lew Horton 2.5 inch i bought back in 1982....im still kicking myself:(

My only 686 - a '2004 Stocking Dealer Exclusive'. It came equipped as a 7-shooter, 5" half lug, HiViz front sight, V-notch rear sight, even with Ahrends square conversion fg grips in cocobolo. It languished in the dealer's case for $10 less than a standard 4" 686 - until I rescued it 12/04.

My only 686 is a dash 1 in 2.5". I have some 66's and a 19 (all snubbies)...love them all...but I have to admit my 686 has the best trigger. Don't get me wrong...the K triggers are great...but that 686 is a fraction better. As for shooting? They all perform very well and are accurate but I'm here to tell ya'...the K's are hand hammers with full .357 loads! The 686 handles .357 a bit better although they are all a handful. I prefer +P in all of them for overall performance and personally feel that the snubbies blow a lot of the .357 potential out of the end of the barrel in an amazing display of fire and brimstone! Need at least a 4" barrel to get the extra punch of .357 loads down range IMHO.

I have 2 questions to different posters first what kind of rear tritium sights do you have on your pistol PEF? And second where did you get the nice wood grips and brand Palmetto Sharpshooter? Thanks. I have a 4 inch 686-2 and a 21/2 inch 686-4 Plus. Nice revolvers and my wife can shoot them well also she prefers the 21/2 with 7 rounds.

686-5 Stocking Dealer Special

I recently purchased this 686-5 5". From what I've researched, these are pretty rare with only 1200 made (I'm going to call S&W soon to confirm). It was made in 2000 and was a Stocking Dealer Special. I really wasn't looking for a 5" 686 as I'm still looking for a 629 5", but I couldn't pass it up.

While it is the -5 with the MIM parts, etc., I was glad I found it and like that it's still a pre-lock. It is LNIB and has had less than 50 rounds through it. It is the 7 shot and has the Hi-Viz front sight with the V-notch rear.

I have another 686-5 4" that I bought NIB five years ago that I also absolutely love (I still have to take some pics of that one).
