I got these in the mail yesterday from S&W. I know they are not exactly correct for the 581, but they feel great in my hand. It's time to take this puppy to the range. It's a no dash/no M, and I need to know if it will hold up without the recall mod.

I bought my 581 new without the "M" mod, and never gave a thought of having it done. My 581 is now mooncliped and has the action smoothed out for action shooting. I put hundreds of 38spl rounds through it with no problems.
The one thing that always amazed me was how accurate my 581 and older model 15 are. With a smoothed out action they are like a Swiss watch.
Your new grips look nice, but would slide around in my smaller hand in an action match.

The M modifications addressed a problem with primer (Federal brand) flowback into the hammer nose bushing that would tie up the gun. I would try it with the loads that you will use. If it works fine you could leave it alone, but if you are the nervous type send it back for the free work.

I've been shooting my 581 without the M mod. No problems with 38 and Federal primers. These are my Steel Challenge reloads with medium to high powder charge. 128gn with almost 4 gns Trailboss. Not the best powder; It is what I use for Cowboy Action.

No sane 38 Spl load is going to get in to pressure levels high enough to cause problems in the 581. I have fired many hundreds of THE LOAD, with Federal primers, through mine with no problems (yes, yes, I know it's considered unsafe now, so don't anybody use it).

From what I saw at the time and have read since, the Federal 125 gr 357 was the only factory load that caused problems. Smith might have just ignored the problem, but that load was considered to be the King of the Hill by many LE organizations. As the 581 was directed to the LE/Security market, the primer flow problem had to be addressed.

This was all a long time ago, and I don't know if current Federal ammo would show the same problem.

I have shot all kinds of brands of the magnums. Mine was "locking up" quite often. I just sent it off to be fixed. Does any one know about how long Smith will take to repair it? Sorry to mention it is a 581 Nickel.

No nervous type here. I'm going to do the same thing I have done with my 686 no dash. Bang away with hot loads and if it works fine It goes with out the mod.

I like it!!! I have a 4" 586 no dash. Recently I put a pair of smooth presentation target grips on it that I bought CHEAP! ($15) Still like the original targets. Enjoy your fine Smith. Bob

I started out the same way, but it started and it was about every 10 shots. I hope yours shoots great! Happy shooting!:D
