Co mass shooting

This latest incident bothers me more than other mass shootings that have occured over the past years. Of course all have been tragic. It is so sad.

I'd like to know what other forum members think could be done to prevent these terrible events. I mean while upholding the Constitution and protecting the Second Amendment.

I don't have any constructive thoughts myself. Our society has changed so much since I was a kid in the 50s when there were hardly any gun laws yet we all felt safe and mass shootings rarely happened. The first one I remember is the Texas Tower incident.

What went wrong with our country and how can we fix it?

I think we all have a duty to think about it. What constructive action can we take to prevent these mass shootings?

Maybe there is no answer, which is what I fear is the case and what makes this event so sad.

The only thing I can say is that this guy obviously went bye bye mentally. I won't speculate on what could be done, what a guy with a gun could have done because it's pointless. My wife asked me today what would have happened had I been there and I refused to answer because there is no way to know what's going to happen, how you're going to react whatever. It is way to early to say what caused this sick ticket to start shooting at people, whether it was the economy, he was depressed or Time Lords from Gallifrey told him to start killing people. Anyone who can shoot little kids with the total lack of any emotion like this guy did is truly evil and there is no hope for them. I'm sure there will be alot of talk about what is going to be done and don't think for one second that because it's an election year you won't hear cries to ban the magazines, especially now that it's public the shooter had a 100 round drum for the .223 rifle. The anti's have been panting for some way to get high caps ever since 2004 when the federal ban ran out and Tucson almost gave it to them, this one will should the elections in November give the guy with the D next to his name another term. What we need to do is make sure that we stay right on top of every single thing that the anti's want to do, call them on it. Make sure your local paper gets the facts straight. Call them on it with a letter to the editor or on their Facebook page. Don't give them an inch because they won't do the same for us. But to try and guess why this sick *** did this, there is no way. I have met a few killers in my career, and some were pretty heinous. I have met several child killers in the last eight years and no one could ever figure out why they did it, I think it might be the same here.

The reason this whackjob was successful is the same reason Oswald, Ruby, Sirhan Sirhan, and any number of assassins were able to do what they did, as well as all the suicide bombers we hear of. You cannot stop a lone gunman.

The Cinamark theater chain has a "Gun Free Zone Policy". So it's too bad no one could have shot back, because the theater chain does not allow its customers to carry guns in its theaters. No one could defend themselves.

Tragic Theater Policy

Too bad no one could have shot back, because the theater chain does not allow its customers to carry guns in its theaters. They could not defend themselves. That was also tragic.

Personally I'm a believer in that part of the problem is due to the glorification of violence on TV, in the movies, in literature (specifically books and graphic comic books), and in 1st person shooter video games.

What do countless kids today do when they come home from school? They sit in front of the TV and turn on their XBoxes and Playstations. When I was a kid we went outside to play with our friends. Two of my nieces and my nephew do this nearly every day. They come home and it's either onto Youtube... or they sit down in front of the game console.

Back when I was a kid in the 60's, graphic violence was James Bond shooting the BG without blood spraying everywhere. Nowadays we see more and more movies that glorifies violence like Kill Bill, Volume 1. Tarantino staged the scenes so it looked like fountains of blood shooting into the air every time Uma sliced someone with her Katana.

Don't go to the lake with your friends cuz some BG is there waiting for you... don't answer the phone cuz he knows where you are. Even campy stories like those found in my favorite Evil Dead movies tend to show death and dismemberment in an almost comical light.

How do we fix this? I'm not sure if we can. Banning the movies and TV shows and graphic comic books and violent console games would be seen by the masses as censorship... and Hollywierd certainly would not sit quietly if someone tried upsetting their apple cart. Maybe restrict these types of entertainment to those over the age of 18? Honestly I don't know...

The answer is (at least to me) we as a nation have strayed from our moral compass & foundation set forth by our Founding Fathers. We've taken God out of just about everything. The 10 Commandments out of schools & other places for example. The glorifying of violence in just about every form of entertainment. And what most people won't ever say is that there is a very real Devil, who controls much more than people think. Secular Humanism etc... also contribute to our now godless society. And the lack of a healthy fear of God by most is all too prevalent. All this & more is a part of the problem, of course JMO.

You cant depend on laws as people will break them. You cant depend on the police as they cant be everywhere and if they were there a shooter probley wait untill they are gone. The only thing you can do is be respondsable for your own space and fight and vote for favorable gun laws where you can legaly defend yourself. And arm yourself and practice so you have a chance. It`s almost laughable to think any laws are going to stop someone who is already bent on murder.
Seems the left and anti,s think so though. I think even they cant really belive it will, it`s just smoke for a excuse to get their adjenda through to enforce and keep the type goverment they want if and when they get it.

Wonder if the corporation is liable for the safety of their patrons that may have exercised their right to self defense under Colorado law had this rule not been in effect???

Well maybe now folks will look at the Mall Ninja crowd a little differently than they did the day before.

These have been my exact thoughts today also. I really wish I had an answer, but all I do when I think about it is get depressed and sad. These sorts of violent outbursts happened occasionally in the "good ol days" and probably just didn't get the media coverage, but I still think they are increasing in frequency in recent years. I'm firmly against gun free zones, but even if someone had been armed with a handgun would it have made a difference in this situation?? Against a rifleman with body armor?? Who knows. I do know that if I was in that situation I'd rather have a handgun than nothing. Its all sick and sad.

I suppose it could be a slim possibility. Conspiracy theories abound in many past events. If he was a part of some plan and has knowledge of the details he will soon be eliminated. Time will tell......

To me, the more IMPORTANT question is: what do we do with the guy now? If I had to guess, the sorry state of what passes for a justice system in this country will find SOME way to get him a free pass to a mental hospital somewhere and my tax dollars will feed, clothe, and keep him healthy for the rest of his life. All while the rest of us struggle to make an honest living, and keep ourselves insured because we cannot AFFORD to pay for our own healthcare. Ladies and gentlemen, I really feel the time has passed for us to take the battle to the criminals of this world in the form of punishment. Not rehabilitation or treatment, but PUNISHMENT. It will take two or three years to get him to trial, a year or so to debate his guilt or innocence (kinda feel funny just typing that word in the context of this post), and another 30 years or so to carry out a death sentence, should he actually receive one, instead of the aforementioned mental incarceration. What the hell has happened in our country to make us lose our sense of values, and our sense of right vs. wrong?

I just heard on the news he had approximately 3000rds of .223 and 3000rds of .40 ammo. He spent a lot of money on guns and ammo, he was ready for a lot more than what he did. The thing I find odd is he gave up peacefully, what a coward killing innocent unarmed people but didn't have the nerve to shoot it out with the cops (not that I want more people hurt/killed).

I certianly have no answers to the guestions asked here and elsewhere. What I do know is that evil walks among us everyday. It is mostly impossible to predict where or when it will strike next.

All I can do is to be aware and look out for my family. I can only hope to react properly and in my family's best interests when evil strikes.

I don't know what else to say other than I am ready to face any evil that attacks my family until I succeed or I am defeated.

You generally can't get a babysitter for that late at night. Babysitting is usually done by teenage girls, who aren't able to be out that late. So you have to tote the young ones around with you.

no, a responsible parent has the kids in bed and waits until they can get a sitter. there should not be any kids at this showing. period.

Horrible as it is, this really needs to be kept in perspective. Something like this is an exceedingly rare event. And homicide by firearms is not as common as some of the hysteria would have you believe.

Stats from the CDC for 2009 (This is a copy/paste from CDC site):

Mortality
All injury deaths

Number of deaths: 177,154
Deaths per 100,000 population: 57.7

Motor vehicle traffic deaths

Number of deaths: 34,485
Deaths per 100,000 population: 11.2

All poisoning deaths

Number of deaths: 41,592
Deaths per 100,000 population: 13.5

All firearm deaths

Number of deaths: 31,347
Deaths per 100,000 population: 10.2

And here are stats from the CDC for homicides in 2009 (Copy/paste from CDC site):

Number of deaths: 16,799
Deaths per 100,000 population: 5.5
Cause of death rank: 15

Firearm homicides

Number of deaths: 11,493
Deaths per 100,000 population: 3.7

They define homicide as one person killing another, whether that's self defense, by police in lawful pursuit of duty, or murder. The higher number of firearms deaths in the "All Injury Deaths" includes accidents and suicides.

Here's a link to the site:

FASTSTATS - Injuries

If you want to poke around on the CDC site I'm sure you'll find startling numbers related to things such as smoking, medical error, etc.

It's a horrific event, and unfortunately like a lot of issues, reaction to this this may drive policy based more on fear and demagoguery than good sense.

Vote.
