CO movie theater shooting

I was under the impression that emergency exits were supposed to be locked to the outside with alarms when opened?

You nailed it. Now reported on Fox that he had previously opened the door so he could get in. Well played sir.

At the cinema, he entered through a fire door he'd previously left open and then set off some sort of explosive before opening fire with multiple guns, including an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and at least one .40-caliber Glock handgun.

That's the most detail I've seen gun-wise thus far.

The Aurora Police Chief did a great job of deflecting the question about gun ownership. He said that he wouldn't comment on the legality of the suspect having those weapons. It's probable that the suspect purchased the guns, ammunition, and "tactical" equipment legally.

The shooter had the best of guns and equipment. That alone had to cost a significant amount of money. You would think a lot more than what any struggeling student could afford. A AR-15, remington 870, two glock .40 calibers. Helmit, vests, shin and throat protectors etc. "Buckets" of ammo in his apartment etc. It`s another interesting aspect of the act. Now they say 71 people were hit with 12 of them dead. My daughter and family live near there too.

I don't know of any suggested "moderate" gun law proposal out there that would have stopped this.

He's clean as Christmas, no record, no psychological history, nothing. The way he planned this he could have (and may have) used guns with 10 round or fewer magazines. With the gas and his bullet proof vests he could easily reload a pistol and he may have had two anyway. Banning hunting shotguns? Even the AR, any semiauto rifle with 10 round limits would have still led to a horrid tragedy.

Heck, given his apartment he may have just walked in with pipe bombs and started throwing them. Sounds like his apartment is full of such things.

I don't know what could stop a guy like this. Wish there were a way.

It`s shapeing up that this nutcase was acting out a comic book scene in the movie playing the joker as now they are saying that he has dyed red hair, a red goatee etc.

My thoughts and prayers to all of those effected by this demonic senseless act. That's really the heart of the matter, some people are full of the Devil, intent on unspeakable evil. Think on this as well, in the near future when evil takes over (Bible Prophecy) just like in Nazi Germany when guns were confiscated from mostly Jewish people so shall it be in the future from everybody. This & other evil acts with firearms now, just adds fuel to the fire for those coming days, as it were. JMO of course. God help us all!

On my way home from a meeting today I was listening to BBC having a conversation about this. They had callers from all over the world. Two comments popped out of the show that need to be considered.

First, the Mayor of Aurora kept insisting this was an "Isolated Incident". It was pointed out that we have had many 10+ shootings in the past couple of years,

I will add it is the second AR15 type shooting this week [Alabama] and the second Aurora multiple shooting in three months.

The Second comment was that "there has at least needs to be a conversation" for a solution. We can't as gun owners both be absolutely appalled at this shooting AND absolve our ease of getting anything we want as part of the issue.

A couple of weeks ago StatesRightist asked me if I thought the Assault Weapons Ban should be reinstated. I said NO but that I thought that given the right circumstances it could be without constitutional issues.

Between Alabama and this...the right circumstances are beginning to line up. If I were being paid to make a recommendation to folks it would be to get in front of this and begin the conversation of a sound solution to gun violence and quit with the "guns don't kill people, people do" trope. It does nothing to solve the actual problem or a potential problem if the other side writes a solution.

It has happened, just recently on another very large subject when the industry spend 50 years fighting to keep status quo rather than adapt to changing conditions. We got a really big new law out of it.

Off Soapbox.

It is sad that people inclined to gun control/confiscation use a tragedy (like this) as a tool to further their political beliefs. If very strict gun control was effective, then Chicago would not have a problem with guns. The gun crime rate in Chicago is about double what it is in Phoenix with very lax laws restricting gun ownership.

It is probable that all the guns used today were legally bought. Some of the other ordinance may not have been legal. By my count, he had about $2500 worth of guns alone, plus the ordinance he used to boobytrap his apartment, teargas, the ammunition, the ballistic vest, helmet, etc. He had a drum magazine for the AR.

It seems strange to me that he surrendered so easily when he was so well armed. I am very, very glad he was captured alive. He doesn't have very many happy days ahead and he is only 24.

I would not want to be a person who sold any of these guns to him (legally or otherwise).

This fellow thought this through pretty completely. Had there been an armed civilian in the theater he (or she) would have had to fire at an armed intruder (Rifle, shotgun, and two handguns) wearing body armor in a dark theater with tear gas in the air. That would have been a nightmare.

no kidding. Achieving decent shot placement under those conditions might have challenged the most seasoned of gunfighters

It would seem that he planned a shootout as a conclusion to his evil and then chickened out when confronted by patrol cops (most likely armed with pistols). That is a good thing for the officers involved but may well show his true colors...

Maybe so but for sure, he is certainly not one of us.
It depends...He is certainly a gun owner. Some would define him as an avid gun owner.

We don't as yet know his political inclination. Like Jared Lee Loughner we might find his leanings to be hard to put in any easily definable bucket.

It was the very first showing of the new Batman movie - hugely popular, long lines

Still, the question remains: "What kind of morons bring their kids and babies (3 month old) to a movie at midnight anyway."

I'll add, What kind of morons take young kids to this type movie anytime? Maybe that is part of what leads to this type evil act.

You generally can't get a babysitter for that late at night. Babysitting is usually done by teenage girls, who aren't able to be out that late. So you have to tote the young ones around with you.

Back in the 50s I recall that my parents would get my sister and myself into our pajamas and load us into the car and head out to the drive-in for a movie. We would sleep on the back seat. Not an option now most places.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan is still breathing good air. Perhaps if these guys were drawn and quartered, it might make the nut cases give mass murder a second thought.

I can't go along with brutality, even though these creeps might seem to deserve it, but if they were to face quick and severe justice, it might make others think twice. Our Constitution specifies the right to timely justice and our present system affords neither defendant or victims that requirement. In many cases that may not be possible, but both of these creeps should have been/should be room temperature within one-week (or less) of their terrible deeds.
